Barnardo's have been in touch about a campaign they're launching to make sex and relationships education (SRE) mandatory in schools in England. Scope has been found for including mandatory SRE in the Children and Social Work Bill, to which amendments are currently being submitted -- so the window of opportunity is fast closing.
A poll commissioned by Barnardo's, and launched today, finds seven in ten 11-15 year-olds in support of making age-appropriate SRE compulsory in schools. Three quarters (74%) believe all children would be safer if SRE were mandatory. Barnardo's Chief Executive Javed Khan says: "It's time for government to make sure we give all children the knowledge that will help keep them safe. These children have spoken loud and clear and the Government must not ignore them."
