Help!!!!!

Hi everyone,

Desperately seeking some advice. My son has a statement and has recently received an offer for his place at secondary school- our first choice too!!

He moves schools in September (from year 6 to 7).

My current situation at home has changed and I am looking at moving- not far but it is into a different council area (LA).

Will my son lose his place? I'm desperate to keep it- I don't mind loosing the transport and taking him to school myself.

If he got the place because his statement or EcHP names the school, you won't lose the place. It's based on his needs, rather than your location!

You must have got the place this way - his echp coming through? - not a normal offer, as they don't come out until March!

Just realised you said a different LA - that does complicate things as you will be expecting one LA to pay for his schooling in another LA.

When are you hoping to move? Before September?

You may need to ring them (the new) with a general enquiry.

This is quiet difficult because under normal circumstances a pupil with SEN will get the school that their parents specify. If you were in the same LA then I would expect that the same would apply. However as you are going to be moving to a new LA, then the new LA will be paying for the place. The timing is awful because you are way past the normal application date for secondary school admissions and also specifically when most pupils with SEN have had a confirmed place.
If it is not very far distance wise there is a possibility the new LA will have pupils at the school you want to keep a place at. What I would do is look up information within the new LA for special schools and see where an appropriate school will be within the new LA. If the distance is less than your current potential provision then that might be an issue but if it is further then that is clearly something that you can put forward with the new LA as a reason to stay at the school which you want.
I do not think there is much you can do but contact the new LA but a little work in preparation for the telephone call will probably be to your benefit.
