Is it worth going for a Geog remark?

DS got a D in his Geography. He got 228 and would need 240 to go up to a C. 200 would be a D. His coursework appears to have gone down to a D but his teacher told us that it was a C. (He obviously should have done the Foundation rather than Higher).

What worries me is that although he used a laptop with spellcheck, his dyslexia still shines through. With 1000s of exam papers to mark, I worry that some examiners will look badly on the mistakes. The Geog mark scheme talked about coherent use of English on all questions, not just the SPaG questions.

I've read the information about the new remarking rules.

Should I just leave it? He's done OK and has started sixth form but I can't help wondering...

Although slightly different here as dd got a C 2 marks from a B. I really wanted her to do Geo in A levels but she is adamant she doesn't want to do it. Can't force them but I am tempted to get it remarked but then I think whats the point.

Saying that her friend got a D in maths got it remarked to a C, which of course makes a big deal in the case of 6th form choices etc.

difficult especially as perhaps your son is happy with his decisions? If he is leave it, in a few years no one will care what marks he got (will they?)

The problem with remarking controlled assessment as opposed to exams is that the whole cohort has to be remarked not just one.

No it's not worth getting a remark. They don't remark in the same way any more and the chance of picking up 12 points is extremely unlikely.

Thank you. I think it's best to leave it. It's a shame as it's the only one he failed and he got a B in one of the 2 Geog exams but an E in the other.

Son received a B in Controlled Assessment but an E in two papers, bringing his overall mark down to 223.

I have had it remarked on basis that the worst that can happen is that he goes down to an E It may be a glitch for all I know. How could he have got an E in two papers after all those years doing geography?

Also put in for Higher...another oddity, if he was really so bad why didn;t they put him in for Foundation? He certainly wasn't that good at it, but I suspect there was some very very harsh marking on those two E papers.

That sounds a bit odd knittingwithnettles because the lowest grade a candidate can obtain on a higher tier paper is a D.

Need to add that anything below D is unclassified so would be a U. You can't have a grade E on the higher paper.

That's all very interesting. Mine too has one E grade with a D for controlled assessment (teacher marked it as a C) and a B for the other one. The total marks are 228 with 240 being a C. I wonder now if I should send the E paper off? DS has dyslexia so I do worry that markers don't look favourably on poor English even if the answer is correct - the mark scheme did mention good use of English even on the non SPaG questions. This was AQA. Please let me know if your E grades go dramatically upwards although I am not sure when the deadline for remarking would be?

well, in our school (the school organise the remark) the deadline was tomorrow... That's for Edexcel though.

Good luck with the remark. From what I understand, the foundation Geog would have been a much better bet if they are C/D borderline - unlike the maths, where the higher paper was the better option for a C/D borderline (DS got the C in Maths - thank goodness). For us, Geog was the only failure - which is a bit of a disappointment.

Ds also took Higher in Maths, and got a C, (predicted a C, so they obviously didn't want to take risks but still entered him for Higher) that is interesting that Foundation is more risky for the borderline Maths..now I understand teachers' reasoning...

According to the exams officer at Ds school, (but not sure whether he was telling the truth) only 10 children out of 90 taking Geography failed to get C or higher (on both Foundation and Higher papers) I cannot really believe that Ds was so behind compared to everyone else in his cohort, or is that just blind mother love..

I hasten to add that exams officer did not approve of re-mark. He didn;t mention the U just that it might go down and was unlikely to go up. Geography teacher has not been in touch at all I think it is hell for them with so many people being put through the sausage machine of the "humanities" baccalaureate, and History being so snooty, so many pupils are defaulted to Geography rather than being genuinely good at it. So workload of poor geography department is v heavy.

Remark is not worth it for more than about 4 UMS.

Ds went up by 2 marks but not surprisingly he is still a D Still, as he improved the grade on one particular paper and it went from a E to a D (on that individual paper), there was a certain satisfaction...in just knowing that the mark he got was justified rather than a blip.

I think this is going to put the fear of God into dd, who is also doing Geography in two years...and finds it desperately dull.

Thanks for letting us know... I was wondering if I should have gone for it too. At least you know what's what and you are not left wondering (like I am). It's too late now though... all water under the bridge.

At school's suggestion, DS's English Lit has now gone back for a re-mark.

I too am haunted by the Geography... he should have done the Foundation paper. Get your DD revising NOW!

I think it is unlikely to gain 12 marks in a remark. Tough, as a parent you should still go for it, knowing you will lose the monies paid if the re-Mark does not result in a grade uplift. It is one of those things that may tear you up in the future.
