How far do your children commute to secondary please?

Miles and time wise please

Trying to work out if a potential school is too far.

Under a mile and 15 minutes walk.
A short journey that DS could make under his own steam was a huge contributory factor in the school choice (i.e. we decided not to go for grammar in neighbouring county which would have meant an hour's journey). The extra time and energy this gives DS is a huge deal!

Mines not there yet but it will be a 10 minute walk. less than a mile away.

Friends DC spends 15mins on the bus but it is during rush hour and its roughly 3 miles. Bus stop is right outside the school.

My sibling is driven across the city. takes about half hour during rush hour and is 7 miles.

When I was a kid It used to take me half hour and that inc walking a fair distance to the bus stops to get home. Took a good 45minutes if I had to walk. it was 2 miles away.

2 miles, scoots, cycles walks weather permitting, I drive if it's fowl. Two very very busy roads, no direct bus and traffic is hell.

We've been through a few different schools between the kids, so:

Two miles (15 mins on slow school bus, crossing horrible dual carriageway so no chance of walking)
Five miles (10 mins in car, 30 by bike)
17 miles (20 mins by SEN taxi)
and currently
10 miles (30 mins by regular bus, considerably longer by car)

They just seem to shrug and get on with it, on the whole.

6 miles and school coach takes between 25 mins and 65 mins ... Usually around 30.

40 - 50 mins each way about 20+ miles. all at secondary school now.
at infants/junior it was 25 mins each way and about 13 miles.

About 25 mins if I drop her to the tube, otherwise ca 35 mins if she walks to the tube. London ca 5 miles. Reliable, safe.

When considering one secondary school with a commute I thought borderline, I tested it myself at the correct time of the morning, timing every leg of the journey

For me it is not just the expected number of minutes that is worth considering, but also

• reliability - how many minutes of "buffer" needed to avoid being late? (Consistency)
  
• simplicity - is it ONE means of transport, then much better and less stressful than 3
  
• safety - road crossings in London can be scary even for adults, avoid dodgiest places
  
• company on the journey or not
  
• how confident or anxious she feels about a particular route, stress / comfort
  
• how much time it consumes for the parent (not just vs work, but e.g. 4 legs of 30 mins would be two hours wasted! Parents also matter)

45 minute journey but dedicated school bus stopping almost outside our house. One of DD's friends catches the same bus at start of its journey BUT her mum has to drive her to school bus making for a 90 minute journey altogether. This seems very long to me but her Mum says she loves the school and is worth it.

Under a mile. Would take the average person 10 minutes tops. Takes a 12 year old half an hour, can not comprehend how this child can walk so slowly without going backwards.

Only 5 miles away but there's no close bus stop near home, nor near the school, so it's a walk to the bus stop, very slow bus ride into town (round villages and then hits bad traffic congestion) followed by a mile long walk uphill from the bus station to school. He leaves home about 7.20 to guarantee getting to school before 8:50 registration! And that's just 5 miles! Sometimes if traffic is bad, he gets off the bus in the queue and walks another mile.

I used to get a bus 12 miles away.

There was very heavy traffic and it could take up to 90 minutes each way.

I hated it and was always exhausted.

Ours is the only local catchment school and is 10 miles away, about 25 minutes by school bus. Our village is not the furthest from the school either. Although we are in rural Scotland.

7 miles and it takes 45 mins by car in morning traffic. We did consider another school which was 12 miles but would have taken the same travel time.
