Putney High School -glamorising modelling as a career !!

As a Dad of a pre- teenage daughter I was surprised to see the comments from Putney high school equating a girls 'achievements' as a model to those of her and her peers academic results. I would imagine some of the other girls at PHS who did well would be annoyed that they weren't individually mentioned simply because of what they look like. I hope the girl in question does well in life because of what is between her ears and not simply what she looks like. I am very surprised that a girls school still seems to have this 1970's attitude towards women.

is today celebrating outstanding GCSE results, with 87% of entries achieving A or A grades. Some 58 per cent of girls secured at least 10 A or A grades, with 10 girls achieving 10 A grades. 20 girls secured nine or more A grades. Olivia Mason Pearson sat her GCSE exams just two months after making her catwalk debut at Paris Fashion Week, modelling for Balenciaga under creative director Alexander Wang. Olivia was signed by agency Select Model Management after being spotted in the street last October. But it was an achievement - not all achievements are academic. Not all people who are attractive are models. She did well, and juggled that with exams.

I echo Potterings comments.

Plus modelling is a lot more involved than just "looking pretty" it's bloody hard work & requires a certain skill set over & above good or interesting looks, she did extremely well to manage that along side GCSEs. It's a balanced report, so I also don't understand what the issue is ?

OP I agree with you. It's just name dropping for the sake of it. Or rather name dropping to attract the kind of students they want to attract.

Most schools would have had a seperate article about the model when she did whatever they thought was amazing and not combined it with the article about GCSEs.

Was this the only student whose non-academic achievements were mentioned?

Any sports/acting/music/dance/chess/debating/STEM Olympiads/young entrepreneurs featured too?

IM(limited)E of GDST schools, all those things are included regularly in publications.

And exam success is harder to achieve when combined with any form of public performance schedule.

It is the only non academic achievement mentioned. Which is what makes it stand out as being inappropriate. If it was with other's it wouldn't.

Seems ok to me. Just giving credit where they also do for gymnastics or karate etc.

You are wrong. I personally know this individual and she is lovely girl who, incidentally became head girl, NOT because of her model status, but due to her kind, caring and rather hilarious demeanour. The article was not trying to portray her as better than her peers, it was simply trying to demonstrate her fantastic abilities in terms of managing a modelling career whilst also completing her studies. I would say that you're attitude is quite 1970s for immediately coming to this conclusion.

I can't see anything wrong with it or with it being the only non academic achievement mentioned (if this was the case) as she was probably the only person who had to combine doing a paid job with GCSEs.
