Good maths and science books for year 8 please.

Will appreciate if any secondary teachers would suggest some good maths and science books that are most useful to have at home. I only want one copy for each of the subjects or may be two. I know in school teachers probably use a variety of books and materials for teaching. However I feel at least have some good course or work books for reference will be very useful for parents especially at times when dcs want extra support. I find internets are confusing so I always wish I can have some good books as a guide or staring point. Many thanks

Any of the key stage 3 science revision guides will be useful. There are a nu ber of them available, just chose the one that seems most appealing to your dd/ds.

I was going to mention ks3 workbooks and revision guides also. Our local WH Smiths and waterstones have a good range of these books.

Our students have on line text books so check yours don't.

Thanks for your responses so far. I will email her year 8 teachers about online books in sept or may even email the head of year8 to check to see if the school uses on line books for any of the subjects.

I teach secondary science and like the CGP revision guides for KS3.

My son has online textbooks but I bought the paper version as it was easier for him to use - Activate by Oxford publishing (they have three levels for years 7, 8 and 9). It was definitely easier for him to revise from than having to log on to a computer to read.

remember that anything more than a few months old will not reflect the curriculum changes.

The science key stage 3 curriculum changes are in the 2014 book, no changes since then so it's definitely not out of date

sorry, I only know about the maths ones. text books have only been issued recently.

Thanks everyone i just bought the cgp ks3 maths book. It looks quite ok. But I wonder if i should get a book just specifically for year 8. Do secondary schools teach the topics every year? My dd was only at 5b in maths and 5a secience. They are quite rubbish grades in our mumsnet land.

We don't teach the same topics in science every year, that would get a bit boring, but there is some scaffolding, so what we teach one year may expect some knowledge from the previous years. Yes in out school a 5a would be putting a y8 into 9 student into probably set 4 or 5 out of 5, so any work you can do over the holidays to consolidate and possible gap fill would help your dc.

Getting a KS3 maths book level 4-6 will cover the topics she is likely to meet over the next year. Going by levels rather than years in maths will ensure the right difficulty.

Rosi, my dd is starting year 8 in this comming September. So she is year 7 into yesr 9. 5A is her end of year 7 attainment. I thought she would somewhere in the middle. So dd really not very good?

Ok, sorry, my apologies, don't usually teach y7 so not sure what their average levels are, but clearly this is considerably better than if a year later.

A 5b level student at the end of Y7 is probably a solid B grade in maths, but with the new GCSE all bets are off.

What attainment level in yr 9 do kids need to do triple science gcses? Do they need to be equally good at maths to be allowed to have that option? My dd enjoys science apart from psych and maths.

Hi my daughter will be going into year 8 and she has found the cgp ones helpful - collins also do a range but might be idea for your dc to look at both to see which style they prefer cgp also do foundation and higher level so make sure you get the appropriate ones. My gg school use the activate range for science and have access to it on their school ipads but i would prefer to get a hard copy as i think its easier - muminhants1 - if you dont mind can you let me know where you bought yours from ( thanks )
