name changed as I need help to try and express this question in algebra format and although I have calculated he answer of 28 which I believe is correct I cannot think how to write out the formula. Realise its shocking I cant manage Y7 homework but its been a long time since I had to do this type of thing !!
The school team played 38 games.
Won "n" and lost 5 games
Each win = 3 points
Draw = 1 point
defeat = 0 points
altogether they scored 89 points , how many games did they win.
Answer to be expressed as algebraic equation.
Help gratefully received Smile

N+d+5= 38. Therefore d=33-n
3n+d= 89. So 3n+ 33-n=89
2n+33=89
2n= 56
N= 28

3 point for every win, Number of wins =n, points from wins =3n = 3n
1 point for every draw, number of draws = d, points from draws = 1
d=d

Total number of points 3n+d+0=89 (0 points for losses).
Then you are substituting in 33-n instead of d
