CGSE Ancient Greek

DD would like to study this GCSE at home because her school is no longer offering it. I'm looking for materials but not sure which ones to get. I believe exam board would be OCR. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thank you

DSs school use Greek to GCSE by John Taylor as their main text book. But I dont know about the set texts as he dropped the subject at the end of year 9. I think they also sit OCR, certainly DS did for Latin. Eton has some online resources and memrise can be useful for learning vocab.

Hi ChlorinePerfume, have you considered getting a bit of personal support from someone studying it at university or A-level?
I studied greek a long time ago and found it really helpful to get support from someone a few years older than me!

We know an amazing tutor (PM me if you want to know more). DS2 looked at doing it as an extra and he was advised not to bother with the GCSE but go straight to the AS level. The tutor who has an excellent track record reckoned he could get it (an A grade) in a year with hard work. He never did it because it was too much with full boarding.

John Taylor's Greek to GCSE is the best (and standard) textbook. The set texts are currently Herodotus and Iliad something, but the specification is probably changing - have a look at the OCR website. To be honest, I wou recommend a tutor, at least for the set texts: they're more difficult to tackle independently than the language papers and it would be almost impossible to teach yourself how to answer the literary criticism questions. Where are you based? If in London I can recommend some potential tutors.

Agree with others that John Taylor's Greek to GCSE is a very good language resource. I use these workbooks - they give very good translation support but no literary analysis so additional commentary books or tutoring would still be needed www.classicalworkbooks.com.
