academy conversion

my child goes to an ok comp which is lucky to have good (older & v experienced) science/maths teachers as well as excellent music. The school doesn't get wonderful OFSTEDs - however I imagine that this is catchment related.
am I wrong to worry that the high-powered head wants to convert to academy status? i worry about the really good staff and the kids who might be marginalised. have been reading everything i can find about academy conversions... any advice would be gratefully received!

more than 2/3 of secondaries in the country are now academies
it will happen
accountability will drop
little else will change
teachers are covered by TUPE

Unless they join post conversion, when they can be royally screwed over.
