Ok I knew I was bad at Maths but did not realise just how awful until I have been on dd's mymaths, she has been set homework on single brackets and substitution. How can I help her when I have no idea what to do?

Are there any websites which would help me with the Math work?

Khan academy?

If you google simultaneous equations you'll have more luck with an explanation. The idea is to pick one variable and define all others in terms of that variable, then simplify & solve. They are much easier than they appear.

If you're having problem with a specific problem I'd be happy to help.

Good idea with Khan the best way is for us parents to get clued up. A bit of Khan or a revision guide can jog our memories so we are able to help. Lots of people resort to a maths tutor to help with this stuff, but its not rocket science really ;)

Is there a student section on the school's website? Ds's is fantastic- loads of help available there. Worth looking!

I'm enjoying the Khan website, but it has shocked me just at how rusty my brain is. I do really struggle with algebra though, always have, will have to start at the basics I think.

I have a younger dd as well so I will need to learn to help her.

carol Vorderman does a really good book - very simple and well laid out. I'll see if I can remember what it was called.

No curlew, no student section - what a good idea!. Bit annoyed with her teacher tbh, he told them if they don't get a green face on their online homework they will get a detention. How can you punish someone for not understanding?

Maybe the green face means they've attempted every question?

That doesn't make sense otherwise.

No the green face means they got all or most right, amber face for so so, red face if a lot of wrong answers, even if all questions were attempted.

There should be an L on the right hand side of the homework, if you click that it takes you to the lesson that goes with the homework.

A green face is 70% or more right.

Thanks giraffe have found the lesson and dd has managed an amber face at least, enough for tonight I think.
