Hello!

Since most children and parents have most likely chosen their GCSE options, I'm interested in what they have chosen!

I've just created this for other Mumsnet users to discuss and speak about their ds/dd specific option choices, and to see other users views and opinions.

My ds has chosen: (Compulsory then Options)

Mathematics
English Language
English Literature
Technology - Product Design
Religious Education
BTEC P.E
Single Science

4 Option Choices only:

Triple Science (2 options)
History (1 option)
French (1 option)

I hope to see Mumsnet(ters) posting and discussion, hopefully enjoying their-selves and ready for GCSE stress! (Lol =P)

Mine are older but they chose:

DD: French, German, History, Geog (+ 7 compulsory with Triple Science)

DS: French, Latin, History, Geography, + same compulsory 7 + Additional Maths.

so both took 11 GCSE's.

Good luck to those starting again! :)

My son's has been a nightmare. He is a very bright boy, but has SEN which make it all a bit difficult, in addition to which he is lazy AND has a very teenage attitude at the moment. I arranged with the school for him to take a cut down timetable next year.

So he will do:
Maths
English Lang
English Lit
BTEC RE/Sustainability course

Then his optional subjects are:
Double science
Geography
and BTEC Music IF he pulls his socks up for the rest of this year and makes a good effort at school.

The rest of his cohort take an additional 3 subjects - two options and Welsh.

BestIsWest · 20/03/2012 20:44

He is still deciding(sigh) and has SEN too.

Compulsory are
Maths
English Lang
English Lit
Welsh
ICT Short course
Double science

Options chosen so far
Music
Geography
Media Studies

1 more to be chosen from Triple Science, History or Art. I think he wants to choose Art but only if he can do 3D design. He likes History but is put off by the amount of essay writing required.

DD has compulsory:
English language
English lit
Maths
RS
Double science
MFL - French

She then has 3 options:
Triple science
Geography
PE

Most of the courses are iGCSE. Interestingly the school (independent) hasn't mentioned English Bacc at all and history and geography don't seem to have been very popular choices among the girls.

Quite a few of DDs friends seem to have had huge arguments with their parents about options, mostly around how many academic / arty subjects they take so I'm pleased we have agreed with DDs choices (I did start subtly guiding her towards triple science at the start of the year...)

compulsory are

english lang and lit
maths
it
triple science
re
pshe

DS yr 11 options

German
History
Electronics

DD yr 9 chosing now

would like to take

History
Italian
Drama
and Twilight Art

unfortunately the subjects clash and not quite sure what is happening at the moment. She may have to drop italian as it clashes with history, but I am going to see if there is a way she can take Italian outside of school.

Benson - if they do iGCSEs then bizarrely they count for naught in the government statistics so they probably wouldn't count for EBacc.

I just had a thread because DS1 couldn't make his mind up between two courses and had some very helpful advice from some lovely MNers (thank you again!) He had to get his choices in for last Friday and the final list is:

Compulsory,
English Literature
English Language
Maths (might be AS rather than GCSE as he's taking GCSE now, depends on what he gets this summer)
Triple Science

His choice,
History
French
Computing
Music

He's also doing PE and RE, but they aren't graded. He should also be doing ungraded ICT but as he's opted for Computing he drops it and uses the time for that GCSE instead.
Also, the school has arranged the curriculum so that everyone should cover the subjects that will give them the English Bac.

DS is in year 10 and is taking:
English literature
English language
Maths
Triple science
IT (half)
RE (half)
Sports Science
Geography
French
Economics

So far he has had the most problems with the triple science because the teachers are shit and they let anyone do it regardless of ability so there is a rather large spread of ability and he has enjoyed sports science the most as he absolutely loves his rugby so being able to play more is perfect for him.
