Hello mums

We have moved to Glasgow from the US in the middle of school year my DS is 5 years old. We found a rented place in anderston primary area. Any reviews of the school? Thanks 😊

A good place to start is the index of deprivation, which shows you how deprived an area is.

You can see by putting in the postcode of the school that the area is very mixed. High rates of deprivation immediately surrounding the school, less deprived further north around the Woodlands area. As for the school itself, no direct experience. In Scotland you also have the option to ask if there are any places in other schools close by - it's not like the US with fixed school districts. If there are spaces in other schools you can apply for one of those.

The catchment for Anderston is very deprived, but I wouldn't be put off by that. The reputation of the school has improved hugely in the last few years. I'd be happy for my kids to go there.

It’s been difficult to find rented houses near the good school areas. Let’s hope something works out.

The school is very mixed... I used to stay nearby. Used to know someone who was a teaching assitant at the school and said it was tough because of dealing with neglected children/poverty etc. But it did seem nice, as in the staff were nice, all tried their best etc.

But you have the right to ask for a placing request into any school of your choosing. You might not get in, but it's worth asking. And by asking for a placing request, you're not giving up your right to a place at your local school.
