Is it S5 as well? If so, DS is going into S5 and is is taking Higher Maths, English, Philosophy, Chemistry and Engineering Science. He wants to switch the Engineering Science to Computing Science, but doesn’t yet know if he’ll be allowed. He was chatting to the relevant teachers at the end of last year and goes in a week on Wed for a half day when their final courses are agreed- we’ll see.

Dd is now thinking about college, rather than Uni, at least for now.
Such pressure put on them at a young age.

DD in S5, doing highers English, biology, chemistry, geography and picking up Nat5 business. She couldn't face higher maths or French so didn't take them although she ended up with N5 A in both subjects. Hoping for Uni after S6 and a gap year as she's so young, 15.5 at present.

I've ds in s5. Nat 5 results were ok, so doing highers in English, Maths, Physics, Computing and Art. He's aiming to do architecture when he leaves, but if he doesn't study a whole pile harder than he did in s4 its questionable. He's not as naturally smart as he likes to think!

DD in S5 doing H English, History, Maths, Chemistry, Biology. She's switched school for S5. Old school had management problems - head removed from post for several months, reinstated, removed again for a year and now finally gone for good. Four different heads in four years - not great. Started new school at beginning of June. Much calmer and kids really welcoming to her. Although interestingly, she says class teachers generally same quality as old school. I hope she can keep up at the new school as it has a bit of a reputation as an exam factory. Couldn't help getting the feeling at enrolment that they were a little worried that she might dilute their results.

Ds is going into S5, not sure what will happen with his subjects to be honest. Will find out next week.

Hi All can I join too? Dd going into 5th year and taking Highers in English Maths physics Chemistry and Design and Manufacture. At the moment she is thinking about engineering or something Maths. Rather her than me I hated maths and barley scraped a pass many years ago so my heart goes out to students who struggle with it. I think your brain either works that way or it doesn’t!!x

Alitte DS is similar. He loves Maths and is vaguely considering it as a possibility. I was OK at Maths at school but I went to a liberal arts college (US) where we had to do two maths or science courses. Because my school had done an intensive Calculus course in 12th grade, I was stuck doing two intermediate college maths courses. Discrete Math almost killed me. I actually loved it, but only understood about 10% of it and very nearly failed it. Grin

DS is completely torn about what he wants to do so am hoping S5 gives him more clarity. Depending on the day he wants to:

Go to St Andrews to study either Maths, Philosophy or Chemistry.

Go to Cambdrige to study Philosophy and then become a teacher.

Study Maths, Philosophy or Chemistry somewhere and then do a law conversion course. Hmm A bit odd as he definitely wants to end up in the US.

Study Maths and become an Actuary.

Go to an Ivy (Dartmouth might suit seeing as he loves St Andrews so much) and decide on major later. This would suit him well if he doesn’t decide on a specific direction over the next year! My gut says to do undergrad here and postgrad in the US (particularly if he is looking at Law and long term in the US!) but I’m swithering...

My ds is going into S5. For Nat 5's he got C in English, failed Chemistry and D's for the rest.
After the shock and disappointment wore off, his plan is to take English higher, see if they will let him take Computing higher ( was getting over 70% in all tests and they said he was on track for an A - but badly flunked prelim and got D in higher ) he said he will resit it if they don't.
Resit Physics and Maths and taking up art nat 5.
He can't confirm until school restarts a week on Tuesday, so fingers crossed they agree and it all works out.
Hopefully this is the wake up call that he needs to work harder...

DD1 in S6 planning on doing AH Maths, Physics and Music and H Biology. She only really cares about the Physics though and goes all Brian Cox like when explaining the wonders of the Universe (not that she actually has any time for BC and his mystical dumbing down ways). On the mend from mystery illness so just hoping to get her back to school and on track some time soon.

DD2 in S5 doing H Maths, Physics, Chemistry, English and History. No idea what she wants to do and is young for her year so may take a windy path. Really would like a doss job so she has plenty free time and mental energy for designing graphic novels - really good at art but no desire to go to art college, but planning H Art in S6.

Hi Sparkly your ds can def turn this around. My friends dc didn’t do as hoped for standard grades a few years ago but worked really hard at subjects they enjoyed (key to the whole thing I think!!) and ended up with 4 very good highers and upped 2 grades in the standard grade that was reset. They are flourishing now on a uni course that is just right for them. X

Ds2 going into S6 doing Computing AH, Graph Comm AH (with option to switch to resit the H if his work isn't AH standard - although it should be), and resit H Maths (although he still thinks a chat with his teacher when they go back week will allow him to ignore his D and stay with AH)
