Any other Scots living in England and hating the World Cup?

Like now, when the En-ger- land hysteria is in full swing? And about to get much worse according to the score today...

I'm happy for my English DH but every World Cup I secretly hope for England to get knocked out so things can get back to normal and I find my homesickness gets worse as I have to deal with all the "oh you're just bitter because Scotland never qualify/you're not interested cos you're Scottish", etc - all usually said after I've not breathed a word about any of it. Hmm
Plus if I hear fucking 3 lions again I'll scream.

don't live in England then, is all I can say. Or don't watch TV.

In the meantime here is a cheery song for you...

I mean, if I lived in Scotland and said how I hate it when Scotland do well in the World Cup, I think I would get roundly slagged, and rightly so.
Yet England/the English are fair game, it seems.

Me too. But not any more so than when we lived in Scotland. I don't like football. Some people find that terribly hard to understand.

English living in Scotland and still hate it, football is boring and it messes up the soaps

I’m English, living in Wales, and am pleasantly surprised by how the Welsh are behind the English in terms of football. The pubs are packed with people wanting England to win. It’s heartwarming.

My stepdad is Scottish and absolutely hates England and anything English so expected similar here.

I'm also a Scot living in Scotland and I also feel your pain OP. I think it's getting it forced down your neck constantly on the media to that gets on my tits the most. My dc's were unimpressed last World Cup to find even their bloody Mars Bars had St George's crosses on them 🙈 None of us watched this match but DH watched the last England match with the sound down as the commentators hysteria is more than he can deal with.

Going against the grain here, but I am not hating this as much as I normally do. It feels different this year, with less arrogance and entitlement, and more humour. The players all seem nice lads, and Gareth Southgate is nice too. Normally I think I actually couldn’t bear it if they do well because it would be insufferable but this time I think it might be okay.

Forgot to add I am Scottish, living in England and married to an English man.

itsnachocheese it did come up as saltires, and thank you for reminding me of the fabulous word 'scunnered' - I miss it, like 'glaikit' there's no alternative!

Have to laugh at the comments about just not living in England/watching TV or not getting behind England.

Of course I should just divorce my husband and move hundreds of miles from my dc because I find the World Cup extra tedious because I'm a Scot in England. Hmm

Funnily enough I moved to England during the 1998 World Cup and WAS behind England - well Scotland were only in it for their usual 5 minutes Grin - but 20 years of unprovoked piss-taking comments has changed my mind somewhat so no need to talk to me about being "fair game".

It is forced down your throat, as a pp said. It's not just football I suppose, I get bored to death with things like the royal wedding and Love Island. But the patriotism linked with the World Cup means I'm targeted more, no matter how much I try to keep my head down. . Any minute now my DH and his drunken friends are going to burst in and before I even open my mouth it will be "oh you must be pissed off with that result?!", etc and other similar comments I've heard seventy million times before(not from DH, just his friends). Then at work on Monday I'll be dodging similar comments. And god forbid I don't take it in good humour because then I'm a sour Scot and more piss-taking ensues.

I was just looking for similar-suffering ex-pat Scots, not for a fight/argument with any English people, I spend enough of my life trying to dodge that, thanks.

My heart bleeds Hmm

Jeez - it's not like England football fans usually have anything to celebrate - this is the first time in 28 years that we've reached the semi-finals! Personally, I think if you choose to live here, you'll have to suck it up once ever quarter century.

Seriously? If I'd written a post like the OP's about how shit it was living in Scotland during the Five Nations and when Braveheart came out I'd have been told to feck off back south of the border if I didn't like it! In the circumstances, I thought I'd been fairly restrained.

So you are saying just because England have something to celebrate that the op should put up with insults and hassle because she is Scottish?

There’s a great feel-good factor going on and I’m sorry/not sorry if you can’t feel it. Surely you don’t begrudge the English enjoying the unusual success for their own country

Quite Juneau.

Not sure why the royal wedding has pissed you off OP.

No, I'm not saying that - abusing someone for their nationality is shit - I experienced xenophobia in Scotland and it was horrible. But hoping England get knocked out early is just mean-spirited and in these times where there is little to proud of as someone who is English/British with all the Brexit bullshit all the time I'm just happy to have something to feel proud, or at least happy, about. But no, I'm not condoning anyone who utters anti-Scottish sentiments - that's crap.

Loads of people don't like the World cup and don't get ribbed for it, you must be spectacularly dour about it. You've gone to the effort of creating a post saying you hope England get knocked out and then wonder why you get grief for it!

It's fucking rude when people choose to live in England and then complain about our patriotism for events like the Royal wedding and the football.

Some of my non English friends are always saying how much they hate England and the English. I wonder if they realise how offensive they are? I have to bite my tongue to stop myself asking them why they live here

Report
hudyerwheesht · 07/07/2018 19:33

juneau - xenophobia is wrong, no matter which direction it is going in and for the record I would not have been one of those people telling you to feck off if you didn't like it there, I come from the Scottish borders and so knew lots of English people growing up.
I don't begrudge their success, I'm happy for my DH in particular - I'm just not happy for me because I know what it means for me. If that makes me mean spirited, so be it. I will heartily join in with the celebrations if I'm left the fuck alone to do so without getting "oh you don't really mean it, you want us to fail really cos you're Scottish".
Trust me, I can't win with this; don't begrudge the success and you'll be called a fake, begrudge it because of the hassle it causes and be called xenophobic.

Oh and the royal wedding didn't piss me off - the ceremony was lovely - it was the hype and non-stop coverage leading up to it.

I’m an Australian living in England with an English husband and English kids who doesn’t give a crap about football (or cricket, but that doesn’t stop the comments!)

I’ve never come across anyone who was nasty with their comments, though. Usually I find World Cups (and the Ashes, and whatever else) mildly tedious but do you know what, this one is bloody lovely and I think much needed for a very divided nation.

I’ve always had a lot of time for the idea of sport as a unifying force, whether I’m personally interested in the sport or not.

I do think it’s a bit mean spirited to wish England would be knocked out so that you wouldn’t have to put up with people being happy/patriotic/excited. Yes, you and I have to put up with some joshing and annoying comments. But for once it’s coming from such a positive place for English people, rather than the really anti-Australian bollocks I get sometimes. I’ve learned how important it is to differentiate the two.

I bloody hope they win. Not because I particularly care about the team, or football, but because it would mean so much to so many people.

I'm Scottish and live in England. My DH is English. I haven't had negative comments from anyone. I'm not really into football, but am happy to see England win, and I'm enjoying seeing people celebrating, including my DH (who loves football).
