If I were to visit Whithorn... where is the best place to stay?
Am I better staying in nearest town? (I gather this is Newton Stewart?)

Also... any 'naice' spa-type hotels.

I could be wrong but I am not aware of any hotels with spas in this area of DG.

Hahahaha Grin there is nothing 'naice' about this bit of D & G apart from the scenery. I grew up in these parts and I believe the Turnberry Hotel in Ayrshire is very naice. I would stay there and visit Whithorn (very quickly) from there Grin

It would be an hour and a half commute thingirl Grin which is the same as it would be from where I live...

Was hoping that there'd be some gem nearby that I could roll out of bed and be on site within 30 mins.

I had promised a friend that if she accompanied me I'd treat her to a naice hotel for a girls weekend. Might need to rethink!!

Stayed at the Cairndale in Dumfries a few times when DD1 was competing in swimming galas at the pool across the road. It has a small spa. I could kill some time with younger DDs splashing about, lazing in steam room etc. It's far from a destination spa but given the dinner, b&b deals we nabbed on Hotel Connextions it was decent value.

Some might say an hour and half wasn't far enough away Grin The Fernhill at Portpatrick used to be nice, and Portpatrick is very lovely.

I would stay in the Steam Packet Inn in Newton Stewart - but then I like beer.

I've also stayed in the Cally Palace (years ago) when we went on a 'Five Red Herrings' holiday a few years ago. I liked it then - can't remember if it has a spa, do remember a good bottle of pudding wine!

Knockinaam Lodge near Portpatrick is the 'nicest' in the region. Highest quality food and lots of (discreet) famous faces.

Forget luxury hotel, you'd be much better off booking a self catering cottage/house in the area (there are plenty to choose from).

While you are in Whithorn, make sure you have an ice cream 🍦 in the chippy/cafe. They make it themselves and it's probably the best ice cream IN THE WORLD. No trip "Doon hame" is complete for me without one!
