Hi, Myself and my family are looking to move to Hamilton in south Lanarkshire, I was wondering if anyone could tell me the best areas of the town to look and ones to avoid? As have read in different places online sane areas are not as nice as others. We will be looking to rent a house/flat with a budget of around £600pcm for rent plus bills.

Diane , do you have school aged children, because if so you might want to think about what schools you want and focus your search around them .

How close do you need to be to Hamilton ? Are you working there and do you have a car or will you be travelling by bus / train ?

Can you consider other areas within a reasonable travelling distance ?

Hi, I currently have a child of 3 years if age, Hamilton would suit us best as we only have one car and hubby needs that for work in the borders and I am starting a uni course at west of Scotland uni. So Hamilton is our much preferred choice .

My husband works in Hamilton and says avoid Fairhill, Laighstonehall and bits of Burnbank. Also if your husband needs to get onto the M74 then avoid Torhead Farm and other estates nearby as it can take ages to reach the junction. He suggested Silvertonhill, bits of the town centre particularly to the south and west and even adjoining villages like Ferniegair and Bothwell.

I would agree with the areas of Hamilton mentioned. I'm not sure j would suggest Ferniegair without a car. There is nothing there except the train which will get you to Hamilton town centre and to uni but makes more sense to be walking distance of those of you can be.

Also depending when your child's birthday is they could be eligible for school next year? So checking out school catchments is definitely valid.

Good luck with your move OP.

I lived in Silvertonhill Hill Hamilton as a child in the 70's and early 80's(was also known as spam valley as people reckon in order to pay your mortgage you could only afford to eat Spam!)
I went to Hamilton Grammar school and also spent a year at the local primary as well
There is a large green play area in the middle of the estate where all the children used to play
I haven't been there for years but still have family there
