Harrogate/York/Leeds

Hello everyone
I'm looking for some much needed advice.
Job's relocating from London to Leeds and we don't know the area at all.
We're exploring York and Harrogate as possible places to live. Also Chapel Allerton, roundhay & horsforth in Leeds.
Can anyone offer advice on any of these towns/locations. Any areas to avoid?
We're looking for nice residential area not too far from town centre/station as I'll be commuting to Leeds. Ideally it'd have some local shops/high st.
A bus ride/15 minute cycle to station would be fine if it means we can get a better choice of house/area.
Unlike many other posters we don't want to live in a village.
Primary school is important for DS who is due to start in September (and of course later secondary but focus right now is primary)
House - Ideally we'd want a 4/5 bed house with garden, in good location, preference would be Victorian/Georgian/traditional style house.
Budget up to £550/600k though If something exceptional then we can go to the £750k mark, maybe a touch more.
Grateful for any advice or insight people can offer as we are flying blind.
We're hoping to visit in the next few weeks so it would be great to know where we should focus our efforts.
Thanking you in advance
Smile

I don't live in leeds myself but my DD does and used to teach primary in Chapel Allerton. From what she has said it's very popular with families,as is nearby Meanwood which I believe has an outstanding primary school. On the edge of the city with access to walks etc but very family friendly. Also have friends in Roundhay who's DCs have all done well in school and obviously the massive park is an attraction.Houses pricier there though.

Harrogate has lots of victorian stone houses that would fit the bill. The closer to the centre the less likely you are to get gardens and off street parking though. Something like this. Staying within Harrogate but a bit further south out of the centre (handier if driving to Leeds) then this would be possible. Or this, just outside Harrogate in Pannal/Burn Bridge (which has a station with trains to Leeds).

I don't know it so well but York is lovely.

If you want to cut down on the commute then Horsforth and Roundhay are both great. Roundhay you have to be a bit more careful about in terms of school admissions areas. As you will have missed the applications for schools it will be pretty much wherever has space in either area. Chapel Allerton is lovely too, a bit more young professionals perhaps. Lots of character here (and not very far from the shops).

What about Ilkley?

We were blown way by Ilkley! Just wandered if it might be a bit too quiet for us.
V impressed with Harrogate and then loved York. Am sure the tourists get S bit much but we're coming from London and I'm beginning to feel it's a price worth paying for a city with so much more going on. Great pubs, restaurants both in the walled city and out and about. And a great commute to Leeds.

Been so impressed with all the places. Sadly horsforth Chapel Allerton and roundhay didn't do it for us. Horsforth was ok but didn't like the style of houses in the streets we were told were most impressive, and felt there wasn't enough but way of shops, pub and coffee shop in Chapel Allerton and roundhay. But had a fantastic time checking it all out and most grateful to everyone for their advice, but thanks. Wink

Sorry to re-kindle a zombie thread but wondered if you decided on anything yet? I live in Harrogate. I recommend the village of Ripley! It's amazing.
