Winchester or Salisbury? Relocating from Surrey

Hi
I currently live in Surrey with my husband and 3 kids (aged 7, 4 and 2) and we're thinking of relocating to the New Forest area to be nearer to family and we love it there. We're focussing around either Winchester or Salisbury (or anywhere in between) as I also work in London so will need to commute 3 days per week.
I am feeling overwhelmed by how to approach this so would really appreciate any advice on:

  • commuting from either of these locations or the smaller stations on the same lines (do you get a seat, is there parking at the station etc)
  • schools - this is a big move so we want this to be the house that gets all 3 kids through secondary so it needs to be in the right location. I know Salisbury has the Grammar system but what are the options if they don't get into the Grammar?
  • any tips on areas, nice villages where we'll get value for money.

Thanks so much!

Winchester for me every time. The state schools are excellent there, and you don't need to pay for private, but that is reflected in the house prices.

Hi dinobelgo, I am in the same situation as you when you posted this thread. Did you make the move? Has it worked out well for you and your family?
