The normalisation of OnlyFans and porn

I graduated from uni about 5 years ago, and still keep in touch with my course mates via a WhatsApp group chat. Recently, one of them was asking if anyone knew of any openings in our field, someone suggested that she open an OnlyFans account, and basically everyone else (it was a very male-dominated course) chimed in about how that was a great idea and that they had friends who did that and made 5+ figures a month.

Fair play but I personally know of a friend who went down that route, made a decent amount in the first few months, only to be pushed to show her face and do more and more extreme acts to retain her subscribers who all ended up leaving anyway. She has now quit but her videos are stuck on free porn sites and reposted on forums from time to time. Her case isn't a rare one.

Is it just the people I surround myself with? Or is this really how the world is today? After my last relationship broke down because of a violent porn 'addiction' on my exDP's part I feel just feel like it's all hopeless now. Sad

Jeez OP that’s so depressing! Sad

I think it runs a bit like a pyramid scheme/mla - if you persuade a friend to join you get a cut of their coin. More money to be made doing extreme acts, so coercing "friends" to do just that. So now encouraging your mates into porn is incentivised.

What was your field?

I mean wtf.

EG studied maths.

Hello old maths mates, anyone know of any opportunities on the maths front?

Men: have you thought about taking your clothes off and selling the pictures to strangers in the internet?

I mean what the hell?

I hope she told them to fuck off.

How grim. I’m so sorry for young women these days .

Close. Maths and CompSci.

What's more upsetting to me is that it was phrased in a matter-of-fact 'everyone does it' kind of way. Is it really something that so many women do? Was on a dating site right after my previous breakup (horrible idea) and I've had messages asking me if I had one.

What did she say?

What the fuck are these men even thinking?

Report
mistea · 28/01/2021 21:11

She just brushed it off. Unfortunately I've heard from way too many men that women are 'lucky' they have this option because men would do that in a heartbeat if they felt like they could make money from it. Sad

I'd ask them, if you had a daughter, would you recommend her to do that??

Fucking grim. I find the casualness of this suggestion so disturbing.

You should tell those men that they can, but it's a gay audience they'd be catering to.

I am really worried about this. All these celebs have these OnlyFans accounts. I have two daughters and it makes me feel sick what they will grow up to endure.

You know what I was only just thinking that last night when I saw the channel 5 adult night in the tv listings last night... is that how society is now? And how normalised porn is? Worry about the effect it will have on my children b+g... and how dare they suggest that to your friend...verging on sexual harassment, who the fuck would suggest someone do porn when they asked for career advice. Like wtaf.

Yeah I find it pretty grim

I want women to be able to do what they want. But I really can't help but wonder if the thing they really want to do is objectify themselves for men. Like what this man 1000s of women just live doing this? Rather than it being a out having very few options or being gaslit into believing this is what empowerment is.

@Plussizejumpsuit fully agree, more brainwashing on the pretence of female sexual liberation - at the benefit of men of course.

Well I guess for a certain type of man, if you're going to take loads of dick pics anyway, you might as well make money off them. Hmm

In fairness, its been like that a while now and it tends to ebb and flow. In fact, its been a breath of fresh air having female pop artists like Billy Eilish who put clothes on rather than take them off.

Back in the Noughties you had shows like "Club Reps", every dance music video with half-naked women being ogled at and Tulisa from feted-at-the-time group N-Dubz singing "Rip off my shirt lif' up my skirt put it in, put it in" for chrissakes. And don't get me started on all the rappers...

Porn and sex work damages women. It's disgusting. It's becoming normalised and I hate the world we are currently living in.

Maybe... I don't watch tv that much, just noticed the camgirl programme followed by porn wannabies in the listing and just got me thinking...THERE IS NO ESCAPE 🤣

So disgusting, the influx of desperate “reality stars” has done nothing to help the plight of women!

LiberatedWoman

This woman asked on a chat with people she studied maths and computer science with at university if they knew of any opportunities in that area.

The men responded have you thought about only fans.

You don't see any issues with that at all? Ok.

LiberatedWoman

I don’t judge people who want or have to take their clothes off for a living. I judge the dodgy bastards who pay for it even though they don’t know whose the happy sex worker/porn star and who’s doing it out of sheer desperation or being coerced. It’s not easy work and from what I’ve seen it can take a toll on the mental well-being of even the most confident, comfortable people after a while.

I get incredibly disturbed at the sheer hoards of teenage girls who go on sites like tiktok to advertise themselves on OF and boast of the easy buck they make- thus encouraging other kids to go down that route. And what pisses me off the most is how they think shaking their bare ass for a ton of thirsty perverts online is " empowerment". No loves, it's prostitution... sit down now.Hmm
