I manage a small team in a large, but close knit, workforce. One of my team is one of those people that just seems to have bad luck ALL the time. Her DP also works for the company, same site, different area. He is managerial and well thought of by everyone but a bit rough round the edges, working class hero type. Never has a day off sick and it’s like a badge of honour. She has MH issues and he’s very dismissive of it, but in a jokey way. I’ve always assumed it was an act, bit of a persona thing and not reflective of what he’s really like behind closed doors.
Last year there was an incident where he, by his own volition, dislocated her shoulder ‘by accident’ messing about at home. It didn’t sit right with me and I asked her if everything was ok, did she need help etc. She laughed it off but it’s niggled me ever since.
Fast fwd to today and she was unwell at work, COVID type symptoms, so I sent her home and asked her to get a test. Also said her DP needed to do the same and not return to work until they got negative results through. She said ‘if I come to work with a black eye on Friday you’ll know why’. Could have been a joke but what if there’s something behind it? What would you do? Any advice greatly appreciated!
