How many men who claim to be secret agents have you come across?

It seems to be a common theme amongst con artists or those who are married and have an extra family somewhere.

I've now heard of 3 or 4 guys who have very confusing and suspicious back stories and explain everything away as they work for intelligence services and can't possibly answer any questions about their whereabouts or why they're not contactable for long periods of time.

I'm surprised to have heard of so many mysterious men claiming to be secret agents. I've seen it a few times here as well - where someone is worried about a friend or relative having got involved with a guy who claims to be a secret agent.

I was wondering how common it is - if anyone else has met a man who's claimed he's a spy - or if a friend/relative has got involved with someone like this. I think it's loosely linked to the works on an oil rig and is uncontactable story which I have also heard of!

Well I was once seeing a guy who literally was a secret agent(well, he worked for MI5 at least, but not in the field), so not sure that counts. He 100% made it sound more exciting than it was to woo me. 😂

Got chatting to one on POF who turned out to be a phone perv (not surprised).

None. Those who work for the intelligence services would never say so unless you were absolutely committed....

Someone related to DH actually used to work in the post room at MI6. He told my dad he was an agent and to this day my dad believes him. confusedgrin My dad loves spy novels.

A lady at my old gym class married a “secret agent” and it turned out he was a liar and a bigamist. She found another phone in his bag and it all came out. These men are pathetic.

Zero, I imagine if I met a proper one I wouldn't know about it.

Sadly my sister's friend's boyfriend told her he was a spy & SAS & she believed him.
My sister told a friend who is actually in the Special Forces & he researched this boyfriend & found out for definite it was untrue.
The Special Forces actually have a Walter Mitty Society that deals with fakers.
But my sister begged them to leave this man alone as he had 2 young sons.
Instead she told her friend that her boyfriend was a liar. Even worse he was known to be an abuser under Claire's Law... what a catch!!
Sadly her friend took several months to listen as he was so charming.

Surely everyone knows being a 'Boring Bank Manager' is the code for being a Secret Agent.

Whathewhatnow Fri 14-Aug-20 21:58:35

Or working for the Foreign Office...

Ragwort Fri 14-Aug-20 22:00:15

None.

But I did have a female friend who I strongly believe may have been in the secret services, M15, whatever ... we have lost touch now and I realise she was very clever at keeping me very 'compartmentalised' in her life so I have no way of contacting mutual friends to find out about her ( Nothing on SM) ....

I used to live in Cheltenham. Every other bloke there is a secret agent. The ones who say they are aren’t. The ones who ‘have a boring office job’ might be. 😉

Splodgetastic Fri 14-Aug-20 22:01:56

No one has claimed to be but one or two were. ;-) I was a bit suspect about one who gave it much larger than he should have, but he was indeed commissioned in the Intelligence Corps which strangely is a matter of public record.

My BIL was approached by MI5, he had an interview

On the second interview he was asked who he had told about being interviewed. He said his mum and brother

He was told that was the end of the line for him.

Nobody who works for secret service as a “spy” would ever tell anyone. Not even their spouse.

So if a man tells you he has a very boring job in IT where he needs to work odd shifts every now and then, he’s much more likely to be a spy than the man who says he’s one grin

There was a really odd guy I was speaking to on a dating site a while ago that claimed to be an ex sniper in the process of being recruited as a secret agent. It may have been true but I got the mentally ill vibe off him. If it was true I doubt he'd have been allowed to brag about it. Lol!

Craftycorvid Fri 14-Aug-20 22:08:05

None. Met a few who claimed to be ex SAS though hmm

I have read about these type of men in magazines and newspapers - they also seem to have the ability to convince otherwise sane women to part with their life savings. I think there are quite a few of these Walter Mitty types out there and we'd all like to think we'd spot them a mile off yet it's amazing how many women are taken in. I guess it's the old "love is blind" thing.

PlanDeRaccordement Fri 14-Aug-20 22:15:39

Ah, several men and women, and they were all real. ;)

My flatmate. He worked for Tesco in Marketing and apparently he made such an impressive radio advert that, on hearing it, MI5 felt compelled to retain his services.
