Please can someone tell me what to expect after a surgical abortion?

I'm absolutely terrified of what lies ahead but know I don't really have a choice. I've read lots of stuff online about people gaining massive amounts of weight after, even though they are exercising and being careful what they eat. This isn't mentioned in the information the clinic gave me and fills me with dread. I just want to get back to feeling and looking like my old self again as quickly as possible. Is there any way to avoid or minimise this if it is something that commonly happens?

I've never heard of that. I know a couple of friends who have been through that and neither of them gained any weight. I really wouldn't worry about it.

flowers for you

I didn't gain any weight and, aside from some cramps after the procedure, was pretty much back to normal. Everyone is different though x

I've never heard of this. I've had a surgical termination and certainly didn't gain weight after, I can't think of any logical reason why that would happen. There was some bleeding and cramping, no worse than a standard period.

Thank you everyone for your replies. Fingers crossed. I really don't think I could cope with that as well.

Only gained weight through drinking and comfort eating to deal with it. It sounds like you are comfortable with your decision though so I hope this won't affect you.

All the best thanks

Can only imagine the weight gain was through comfort eating. My sister had one and never gained any weight at all.

I'll have to be extra specially careful then not to do that. Thank you everyone

Gaining weight is what you’re worried about?

I have very valid health reasons why that concerns me, plus a whole host of other reasons. Not that I should have to justify myself.

I had one once, never gained weight afterwards.

I've never heard of that as a side effect and it definitely never happened to me. I was struggling with an ED at the time so it would have been a major consideration.

Ignore any negative comments on here. I had one over 20 years ago and didn't gain weight due to it so please don't worry. Not all of us need to 'comfort eat and drink' to deal with the decision, it is quite possible to be 100% sure of the decision at the time and not feel sad about it.

BeauxReves Sat 24-Feb-18 21:52:48

Thank you, hopefully it won't be something that I need to worry about then.

Good luck op. You will be fine. 💐🍷

I unfortunately have had to have two surgical abortions and neither time did I gain weight.

I hope you have the support you need at this difficult

LadyLoveYourWhat Sun 25-Feb-18 00:01:47

I've had two surgical abortions too and can confirm that I didn't gain masses of weight either time. Trust the information you've been given, it will be science based and factual. It'll soon be over, look after yourself and be kind to yourself.

I gained weight, but that was because I agreed to let them insert the bastard Mirena coil. It played havoc with me!

Not that I should have to justify myself. You certainly do not have to justify yourself op.

I hope you are OK.

Definitely no weight gain here either. Felt quite wonky from the GA for a couple of days, then I was fine.

Skarossinkplunger Sun 25-Feb-18 04:42:02

I had one 5 years ago. No symptoms at all. I was back to normal (and work) 2 days later.

PilatesSuck Sun 25-Feb-18 07:06:35

I had a miscarriage and had an erpc, its the same op as a surgical abortion. I lost weight rather than gain it because i stopped eating- i suspect loss or gain of weight is die to comfort eating or discomfort starving rather than the op. The only op side effects i had was i was sore and had severe tiredness because of the general.

Stock up on maternity pads as bleeding can be very heavy, you can get mild contractions after. Also take care of yourself by making sure you have food and drink inside so you dont have to go out for a few days and can just chill if you want to.

BeauxReves Sun 25-Feb-18 09:29:15

Thank you. Appointment is supposed to be tomorrow but I might have to cancel as I cant find anyone to pick my children up from school. feels like the loneliest thing I have ever done. No one to come with me or pick me up either.

Skarossinkplunger Sun 25-Feb-18 09:37:58

You might have an issue with no-one coming to pick you up. The hospital wouldn’t let me leave without someone there. To be fair I don’t know how they would have stopped me.

Is it that you have no friends/family around you or are you embarrassed to tell them?
