*ADVISE NEEDED* Putting Dad on birth certificate

I'm just looking for a little advise, me and my boyfriend are currently pregnant. Due April 18, he is an Indian national and will be returning to India in 2/3 weeks.

My boyfriend will be out of the UK when the baby is born + when time to register, I have been looking online about putting him on the birth certificate whilst he's not there.

I come across a statutory declaration form on GOV.co.uk, this states if he declares the baby is his he can be put on the certificate without him being there.

Has any of you ladies done this before? Do we have to go to court or do any tests before it can be declared?

It also asks for details of the babies birth, but obviously it is still unborn before he leaves, could he sign these details from India?

If he is unable to be named on the certificate what will appear under the fathers name?

Just searching some answers!

It is a notarised form which requires completion in front of one of the stipulated professionals.

I would have thought you need to check with a solicitor re whether he is able to fill in everything apart from the date and have it signed by the official here before he goes, whether he is able to have it witnessed by an equivalent professional in India and send it to you to take with you or whether you would be better to re-register when he is home.

It seems a lot of faff though... how long have you been together?

I would be wary of putting him down if you’re not married and he’s in and out of the country. But best to seek legal advice on what it actually means in terms of his rights and your relationship.

This might be me being cynical and a bit over concerned, but I don't think I would want an Indian national who doesn't live in the U.K. And whom I was not married to having parental rights over my child.

If you have no fathers details on the birth certificate you can get these added at a later date. You would actually have to re-register the birth.
Would this be an easier option to do once his back in the country?

How have you gone from being worried he would abduct the baby to wanting to go to such great lengths to have him on the birth certificate?

If there is no father named on the birth certificate, they draw a line in the space for father's name to show it is intentionally left blank.

If the birth is registered without him, it is possible to re-register the birth later and put his name on the certificate www.gov.uk/adding-fathers-name-birth-certificate IIWY I would wait until he is back in this country and all go together to the register office to re-register the birth and get a new certificate.

This is assuming you are in England. The rules are different for Scotland.
