Rape charges dropped

I've nc for obvious reasons. Just need to tell someone & have no-one in rl I can talk to. Exp has been on bail awaiting trial for ages & I got a phone call today to say they won't be proceeding with charges of rape as it's my word against his & there's not enough evidence. I am absolutely devastated. Can't stop crying. Can't say too much as he has stalked me on mn before. There will still be a trial & he'll face numerous other charges but not rape. I feel like everything I went through giving my statement was a complete waste of time.

Somebody talk to me please

StiickEmUp Fri 24-Mar-17 22:24:32

hello love

So sorry to hear this. It's typical of the situation.

I wish I could change it for you

Please take care x

Gutteddoesntevencomeclose Fri 24-Mar-17 22:26:21

Why did I even bother to put myself through the humiliation of giving a statement when they're not going to charge him?

TinselTwins Fri 24-Mar-17 22:27:41

I'm so sorry xx

StiickEmUp Fri 24-Mar-17 22:27:49

I think the law system stinks and I don't trust police much or the process so I can't answer.

I couldn't leave it unanswered.

It's total shitangry

Imaginingdragonsagain Fri 24-Mar-17 22:28:21

I'm so sorry, you were so brave to come forward. Please don't feel you have wasted your time, although it must Have been awful. I hope that your ex will at least be found guilty of the other charges.

Dilligaf81 Fri 24-Mar-17 22:31:22

Its horrible especially as effectively they are saying his word is worth more (thats how i would take it).
You say hes also facing other charges, hope he gets an appropriate sentence and if he had been convicted of rape as well as other offences they would have probably run concurrently so not affect how long he was put away. I know thats no comfort.
Karma will get him.
Hugs op xx

I thought it would help. I thought it would stop him from doing the same thing again to someone else. I feel like they didn't believe me

Gutteddoesntevencomeclose Fri 24-Mar-17 22:34:07

That's exactly how I feel. His word against mine means they believe him more than me. It sucks

ImperialBlether Fri 24-Mar-17 22:37:22

I bet the police believed you. They'd be really frustrated.

Gutteddoesntevencomeclose Fri 24-Mar-17 22:46:19

I think they did at the time. It's the cps who have decided not to proceed as there is not enough evidence. My statement is not enough

ErrolTheDragon Fri 24-Mar-17 22:46:45

I'm so sorry. But I don't think that dropping the charge because its his word against yours means that they believe him more than you. It will be because the law is 'innocent until proved guilty' and unfortunately they don't think there is enough proof - which is a very different thing. His card will have been marked by your bravery making the statement.

DancingLedge Fri 24-Mar-17 22:49:06

Just want to say how sorry I am

Gutteddoesntevencomeclose Fri 24-Mar-17 22:59:28

Thank you. I know I did the right thing. It just seems a bit futile now given the outcome

AgathaMystery Fri 24-Mar-17 22:59:48

I'm sorry too x

OP, that is totally crap. As others have said, it doesn't mean they don't believe you, it just means they don't think they could get a conviction because the standard of proof in criminal trials is so absurdly high (beyond all reasonable doubt). You have been so brave in reporting in the first place. I hope they nail the bastard on the other charges.

Gutteddoesntevencomeclose Fri 24-Mar-17 23:06:27

I hate him. I didn't think I was capable of hate but I do properly hate him

ErrolTheDragon Fri 24-Mar-17 23:06:32

I thought it would help. I thought it would stop him from doing the same thing again to someone else

It may still have done that - if he was thinking of doing the same thing again, he'd know it wouldn't be one woman's word against his that time.

Nothing is going to make me feel better about this tonight. It came out of the blue & I'm beyond gutted. I'll just have to take time to try & make sense of it.

DramaAlpaca Sat 25-Mar-17 00:07:47

I'm sorry this has happened to you flowers

RedastheRose Sat 25-Mar-17 00:22:28

You have been incredibly brave. It sucks that their isn't enough evidence for the cps to be confident of getting a conviction on the rape charge but that most certainly doesn't mean that you weren't believed. The complaint will also lie on his file so if anything happened in the future there would be a record of your complaint to show a pattern. Try and feel positive about the other matters which are coming before the court as much as it is awful that tepee rape charge can't be proceeded with.

Have you had any support? If not please ring Rape Crisis. So sorry you've had to go through this x

A policeman from the dv unit I spoke to yesterday said that the way things work is that the police often want to go forward with much more than cps agrees to because cps has a rule of aiming for a 95% conviction rate and that even if cps go forward sometimes the sexual offences cases that they feel are clear convictions end up not guilty and the ambiguous ones end up convicted.

It is nothing to do with whether it happened or whether the police believe you or cps believe you and everything to do with innocent until proven guilty and the difficulty of prosecuting sexual offences.

Gutteddoesntevencomeclose Sat 25-Mar-17 10:17:27

If I had known that before I wouldn't have put myself through the trauma of reporting it & giving a statement. I suffer from ptsd & yes I'm getting support through counselling. Still feeling shocked & very tearful today sad
