DH going through a rough time, how can I make things better?

DH is having several problems with work, bad news, things going wrong with the house and he's having a generally shit time at the minute. I can tell it's really getting him down and I'd like to try to cheer him up.
I would fix all of his problems in an instant if I could but it's not anything I have any control over.
I'd like to make a big gesture or do something special to show him that we're proud of him and love him
Any ideas?

No ideas for a big thing other than book a holiday to look forward to?

Nice take away? Favourite dinners? Organising babysitter and going fur a nice meal?

How about something associated with a particular hobby or interest of his so he knows you were thinking specifically and only of him when you chose it? xx

Or something homemade from you and the DCs?

He probably won't want a huge fuss made if he's really down.

First thing is an honest chat about how you are there for him, followed by small luxuries like small presents, meals etc and allowing him some quality time to enjoy his hobbies

You sound like a lovely wife Flowers

Thank you for he lovely suggestions ladies.
I do have the issue I should have mentioned that I'm completely broke at the minute. DH's job is on the line and I'm on the last unpaid stretch of maternity leave so takeaways and gifts are a but difficult for me.
It is his birthday on Saturday and he has a few gifts, I wonder how I can make the day special for him. He isn't usually bothered by his birthday at all.

perhaps family could baby sit for the day and you guys just relax! (As a surprise).
Go for a nice country walk, coffee is cheap, random day time sex is free, massages, cook for him - wine and home made cheese platter?

Get someone to babysit the kids for the day (or over night if you can) and have a day in bed, watch his favourite movie, get in choc, and make the cups of tea / coffee all day. Phones off and all work stuff (clothes / bag etc) out of sight x

Does he like sports/football? At the weekend, tell him to rest, buy him his favourite snacks/beers/pudding and let him relax in peace.

Make something handmade from you and the children.

Book a weekend/holiday away (if funds permit) and surprise him.

Send him a text message throughout the day to let him know you're thinking of him at work and that you're looking forward to him getting home.

When my OH isn't enjoying his job, I leave him a little treat of some sort in his car to come across. Anything from a note to a chocolate bar, something really inexpensive but thoughtful.

Breakfast in bed.
Candle lit bath and wine
Massage
Special dinner.

Yellow post it notes all round the house telling him how lovely he is.

Just as @frankelly suggested, you don't have to spend money.

Dp drive us to Peak District (baby free) for a walk, only cost was my favourite coffee in flask. it was a very memorable day for me. Nearly 5 years ago!

We were very open and relaxed, all the weights we both had were lifted & We made passionate love on way back home, something we wouldn't usually do.

We both felt recharged and energised.
