How long can he have off for grieving ? I'm sorry if it's in the wrong topic.

If he's distressed and unable to work maybe see a doctor who might sign him off with a doctors note

What donkey said. Get signed off with stress if he needs more than a day or two.

A word of warning. If you have a decent relationship with your manager, please please speak to them instead of HR. Many managers will allow more 'discretion' (time off / 'wfh' etc) than company policy officially allows. Once you go to HR, you make it official and could be worse off.

Agree with this - and I'm ex HR. HR have to give you what the policy says. Compassionate leave for a non dependent relative might be as little as one day; there is no "right" to compassionate leave.

Your manager will generally be able to be more flexible.
