How to tell children about split.

My husband is leaving after Christmas. We have been seperated since June but finances stopped us making any real changes to the situation. We still sleep in the same bed etc..

I'm sure the children (aged 5, 9 and 12) know something is a miss but how do I tell them Dad is moving out?

I have a new partner also who will be coming to stay a week in March (kids will be with Dd that week) and is hoping to meet the children. Do I tell them beforehand that she is my new partner or introduce her as a friend. They already know about her as a friend, she sends them birthday presents etc... We have been friends for a few years before getting romantically involved but they have never met the children.

It's all so new and I'm very aware of how things like this can affect children. I want to be as sensitive as I can be.
