Are facebook ads always something you've looked at?

You know the adverts on the right hand side? Are they always things you've looked at? Eg I will look at a pair of shoes and then they'll appear there...

DP and I share a computer, and twice today when I've logged into Facebook it's shown an ad of the same engagement ring......

No, I don't think so.
I think they push ads depending on your profile. Eg age, sex etc. so if he's in 20s/30s he might get ads to do with engagements, weddings, babies etcetera as that's the age these things would be happening to him.

No they don't. I have one for Bentley and M&S Christmas flowers. Neither I have ever looked at.

Nope. They show it based on your profile. I suddenly started getting wedding related ads when I changed my relationship status to engaged. (Also weight loss ) Now I've been engaged for a year I'm getting not-so-subtle "family planning" type ads. I expect when I change it to "married" these will step up a notch!

I think they are a mixture, though, because I do sometimes see ads based on things I've looked at, but mostly they are random "targeted" ones. And I do see the same ones come up again and again.

I used to know a MNer who swapped genders with her husband on facebook and the results were rather interesting.

When I got married, the ads suddenly changed to loans, weight loss and after a year, online dating! Have never used any of those.

I don't get ads on Arsebook. But I do have the best ad blocker, a flash blocker and a Java Script blocker. I do get weird groups they think I'd be interested in joining based on whenever I click 'like' on something. How is The Plymouth Herald similar to The Evening Harold?

Mine are nearly always something that I've looked at, or a similar thing.

Eg - I look at some shoes and it shows me a Clarks advert.

Highly likely you will be getting jewellery of some sort!

Before I installed an ad blocker I would regularly see things that I had looked at on FB ads.

I have a mixture.
Some are really random but obviously based on my profile, eg I used to work for an airline and there's and ad asking me if I got my hearing damaged while I worked for XX (No I didn't)
BUT there are also some ads on there for a holiday company I've looked at and some specific pieces of jewellery that I've looked at in the past few days.
If you get an engagement ring - assuming you want one - you must come back and tell us!

FX that is a very sparkly Christmas!

I'm hopeful BUT he may have plans to do it on 28th or new year or similar so DO NOT be disappointed if not Christmas Day. This will ruin your Christmas as you'll be stressed and then, if you drink, you might say something 'pushy' or silly and ruin his 'surprise'. Be super patient! Give him til you go back to work.

I am so hopeful and confident BUT it might not be Christmas Day so STAY hopeful.

Apologies for all capitals etc but after I got proposal my now DH told me all about some of the pressures (not from me I must say).

Get excited! Enjoy it! If he doesn't, chat to him in January but give him the festive season and not just Christmas Day

It's a combination of things your interested in and things you've looked at. You'll see ads on other websites for things you've looked at too, websites you visit drop cookies on your device and then ads can be tailored to you.

OP you have to remember that FB is not provided as a public service. It's there to make money by collecting information about its users and selling it to advertisers. So of course your browsing history will be used. They know as well whether you post on MN and many other sites. It's one of the prices you pay for using FB.

Middleagedmotheroftwo - I've been getting adverts for lawyers who "specialise in birth trauma and injuries caused in labour" - bloody terrifying! I'd much rather have the stairlifts thank you very much!
