How do you answer the question, why has dad not been in 2 weeks, does he enjoy being his dad more than ours, doesn't he like us anymore?

Mum and Dad are not friends any more because Dad has decided he'd rather live somewhere else with somebody else. Mum and Dad still love DC very much indeed and will always love DC most of all. I don't know why Dad hasn't been around in 2 weeks but we will ask him to explain next time we see him.

The onus should not on the parent left behind to do all the explaining and comforting solo, the one that has walked out has to step up to the plate. If he's absenting himself completely then your friend needs to be as honest as possible with them in an age-appropriate way without resorting to bad-mouthing.
