...is a seriously rubbish broadcaster, isn't he?

Well, I think he is!

I like him

He is the natural heir to Alan Partridge, was funnier at night when trying to control the sort of people who phone in late at night. I notice they altered the time solt for him so he doesn't have to deal with prime ministers qwuestions.

Am very annoyed with five live at moment anyway, what was wrong with using journalists, think Peter Allen is the only one left. And , continuing my rant if I wanted to know so much about the suck up fest that is the brits I would not have been listening to the football!

Trouble is, I think the afternoon slot exposes his lack of depth - he just doesn't seem to know anything!

is far better then Gabby Logan, but nowhere near as good as Simon Mayo!

Anything's better than Gabby Logan...

(have had to stop listening between 12-2)

(sigh of relief when it was Colin Murray this week )

Anything Clayhead? Stephen Nolan? Victoria Derbyshire? ANYTHING?????

Point taken.

Can't stand Derbyshire and not a fan of Nolan either - do like Nick Ravenscroft who fills in for him though.

Does anybody actually like Stephen Nolan? I've never found anyone who does.

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 21/02/2010 11:53

he was v funny at night, i thought, always a step behind what was going on. i can see that this might not be so good in the afternoon.

RustyBear - I'm in your camp on Stephen Nolan. I commented to DH t'other day that SN could start an argument with a paper bag, then switched him off ( SN not DH).All that huffing and puffing's a bit tedious.

I'm still missing Simon Mayo and can't take to Richard Bacon - childish and self obsessed, not a good recipe for a radio broadcaster. Just my opinion

Radio in the afternoon is a real puzzle now - no Simon Mayo ( sob), Afternoon Play on R4 is either depressing or bonkers so I sometimes go to R3 where, if lucky, a cat has not been let loose on a piano.

If 5Live do anything to Drive then I'm an ex-listener!

foxinsocks · 21/02/2010 12:25

I think the whole station is completely boring now. I used to love 5 live and hardly listen at all other than the football commentary and sports report at 5 on Saturday.

I never listen during the week now (used to listen on the way to work and way back).

I find myself listening to bbc london in the morning/evening (or our local commercial station).

5 live is just plain boring. Can't think of much else to say about it tbh.

Report
foxinsocks · 21/02/2010 12:27

Drive has got so bad now, it's just not worth listening to. They've just mucked about with everything too much. If it wasn't for the football commentary, I wouldn't even be listening to it at all.

Oh I like fighting talk but can't bear that smug twat who hosts it so have just stopped listening.

God, this is therapy! What a great topic. The one adjective that is most accurate to cover R5 Live in general is smug. I'm so glad I'm not alone. R4 as long as it's not too droney, R7 if I can catch comedy (C Beebies doesn't hook my girls) and R1 in the morning. I'm too vain to let myself fall out of touch with chart music. Age neurosis.

AllyPallyPark · 21/02/2010 13:11

Oh, and... if you can't sleep and put R5 on at night, you might catch Rhod Sharp with his divinely relaxing style, or another immature, self obsessed R5 live, but brain dead Dotton Adebyou. Spelt something like that. Can't contain feeble male penis/dominant gender references and belittles guest and callers. Wheezes like he sniffs glue. Winds me up then sleep is impossible.

I've been living in a hole in the ground. Those who are missing Simon Mayo:

Is the Simon Mayo show not on R2 now? Is it not exactly the same as it used to be on 5live? or have they buggered about with the format?

[genuinely don't know]

AitchTwoOhOneOh · 21/02/2010 13:47

doton/un adebayo, of course, responsible for the documentary Sperm Bandits.

Report
campion · 21/02/2010 15:55

R2 is a music station ( not my kind, but still) and 5Live isn't. So it won't be the same if SM is being DJ rather than interviewer.

AllyPally - I agree about Rhod Sharp - nearly forgot him. There are lots of interesting items during the night though I do tend to fall asleep!

Dotun's a bit of a curate's egg and would do better to actually listen properly. His guests are more interesting than him.

I loved that simon mayo show on radio 5. Even when I went back to work, I'd try and organise a quiet afternoon so I could work (rather than have meetings) and catch that show, especially on the day they did films (was it Friday)?

Report
Clayhead · 21/02/2010 16:29

The Simon Mayo/Mark Kermode film reviews on Friday afternoons are still on.

Report
foxinsocks · 21/02/2010 16:30

ooh are they? I hadn't realised that. Going back to work sounded the death knell for most of my radio listening annoyingly but hopefully I can download that show on the iplayer and listen to it when I want!

I love Simon Mayo but I have really warmed to Richard Bacon, although I agree the evening spot was far more suited to his style. I think he can be deceptively irreverent and a mischevious interviewer. And I bloody hate Tony Livesey. And as for Nolan - can't believe how young he is actually, he's such an old fogie in his views and style.

Oh god - I hate Dotun!!!!

Richard Bacon is just so self obsessed - I like my presenters to present their guests, not upstage them. I reckon that they won't get the really big hitters coming on Radio 5 in the afternoon any more, which is a shame.

And I want to listen to people who know more than me about stuff - I don't want to listen to Dave from Croydon's opinions!

Kermode is Frank about films

Bacon could be sizzling.

Nolan is abrasive. (Not one of the sisters.)

Miss G,L is versatile

Do any of you listen to 5-lives mens hour on sunday.

I like Womans Hour on Radio 4 They do cover
good subjects.

Jeni Murry Is not pete Murrays daughter.
But both have made a mint.

I'm the other person who doesn't think Bacon is too bad - though obviously not as good as Simon Mayo. He's better informed than I thought he would be and while he is smug and self obsessed he is at least enthusiastic. I quite liked Chart of the Week on Sunday but interesting how he had 3 male guests - and they think they need a Men's Hour. Can you imagine that happening on any other programme on any other channel with women other than on Womans Hour?

Gaby Logan - no personality and really quite false and patronising. Funny how the sports guy George Reilly obviously can't stand her. Shame as she's obviously quite bright.

Dotun - a complete mystery how he is allowed on radio at all.

Tony Livesey - I never listen but if the trailers for his show are the best he has to offer than it's a wonder anyone is listening.

I really like Rachel Burden, Phil Williams, Clare Balding, Peter Allen, Mark Pougatch and Matthew Banister. Aasmah Mir isn't bad either. I thought John Inverdale was a good stand-in for Gaby. It's much better to listen Declan Curry than to look at his smug, forced smile on Working Lunch.

Never listen in the morning as can't stand Nicky Smug Campbell.
