Which do you like better, 5-Live or Radio 4?

I dislike the sport & traffic on 5, but I loathe the presenter bullying & "no time to explain anything so just say soundbites" atmosfr on 4.
I switch between them all day long, when dd isnt tantrumming for Planet Rock, anyway.

Sounds like you the same presets on your DAB as I have No 1 is 5 Live, 2 is Planet rock and 3 is Radio 4 and thats the order in which I listen to them. 5 is my favourite but I've gone off Simon Mayo so listen to the others in the afternoon and at the weekends when the sport gets just a bit too much.

DH also hates the phone-in programmes on 5 in the mornings, but sometimes I find it interesting to hear a sample of people with strongest opinions. Sort of (for me) keeping in touch with mass opinions.

Simon Mayo is much better whem he is on holiday and that chap from fighting talk does it . Used to listen more to 5 live till Jane Garvey left for womens hour and drive is now unlistenable and pm makes me feel more intelligent for some spurious reason

I just can't listen to Nicky Campbell - I want to put him in a bag and kick him. It's that crushing combination of ignorance and arrogance.

I like radio 4 best especially 'Just a Minute' on a Mon evening. But I do like radio1 on in the car. Love to wake up to the Today programme on R4.

Love Simon Mayo, but don't really listen to much else on R5 except the midday news (cos I hate You and Yours) and occasional live coverage of news/sport thingies. R5 is a bit of a wasteland in the evenings and at the weekends IMO.

Used to love Jane Garvey and Peter Allen together - still like JG on Woman's Hour but PA not so good without her I think.

I go between 4 and 5 for most of the day.

I love Just A Minute too.

I love to hate the Archers.

My favourite prog is Mayo and Kermode on Friday afternoons on 5.

Love the film programmes too.

Hate the gardening, shipping forecast, and

YOU AND YOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and Moneybox!!!! arghhhhhh

I really don't like five, soo much sport and a bit dull generally.
radio 4 I love but I agree re Moneybox and, even worse, Moneybox LIVE so I tend to swap to radio 3

I don't like R5, its mateyness and its general feel of dumbed-down ordinary-blokedom. It always takes me by surprise when they do financial reports! To be fair, it probably doesn't help that I tend to only listen to it when DH has sport on .
I don't like their blokeiness invading R4: Eddie Mair was a novelty but now we have Fi Glover and Jane Garvey it is getting too much.

Occasionally the utter poshness / middle aged-ness of R4 fucks me off and I switch to R5 for something a bit younger and snappier. Eventually, though, I inevitably run screaming back to R4. R5 gets too shouty and blokey and the amount of sport is depressing.

I love Radio 5 - even the sport! Comes from years of living in sport mad households.

I do quite a bit of travelling with work and often isten to it on long journeys.

DH bought me a portable digital radio that I can use in the car, because Radio 5 reception on MW is shocking - unattainable in some parts of the country and you have to switch between 909 and 693 in other parts.

I just automatically listen to Radio 4, tho' can't stand the smug scottish bint on You and Yours.

Always seem to hear the prog for the blind on Tues nights and am now world authority on wet macular degeneration as that's all they ever talk about

I love Radio 5, but I am a massive armchair sports fan as well as having an interest in current affairs so it suits me very well. Not a massive fan of phone in type programmes though so tend to listen more in the evenings and weekends rather than in the morning.

In fact it was Jane Garvey moving to R4 that made me start listening to Woman's Hour. I've been missing out on R4 for so long, I always considered it to be a bit too highbrow but I have enjoyed listening to the odd bit here and there. I washed my kitchen floor to Dixon of Dock Green last week - twas fabulous - if my 20 year old self could see me now she'd be shuddering I'm sure

I love 4 and 5 - have one of the two on all day and all night!
Like the chattiness of 5 live at night when going to sleep.
Love the half 6 comedy slot on radio 4 too and the plays.

I met the producer of Go for It at a wedding and she was lovely

Hate the late night shipping forecast as it makes me panic I'm not asleep!

I love the shipping forecast. As long as Charlotte Green is intoning the liturgy, you know that all is well with the world.
And how can you still be awake after the lullaby that is Sailing By?

all day, every day
am fogey
even moneybox

I have R4 on all the time, but switch to 7 or 2 when 'quote unquote' and 'go for it' are on.

Report
wigparty · 12/09/2008 15:49

If Sailing By comes on and I'm drifting off then I start getting edgy as I know what the time is and feel insomnia calling!

agree I mix between two..but am big sports fan so five is on prob more often. Like simon mayo, quite like victoria darbyshire (although it basically the wright stuff on radio) but find nicky campbell very irritating..

like archers, book of week , in our time etc on radio 4 but not you and yours or any of the sodding gardening things

Report
ahundredbiros · 12/09/2008 17:38

I listen to both, but neither during the day at the minute.

How can you find Nicky Campbell irritating? Actually don't answer that, I know how you can.

But I I am very fond, he makes me laugh, a lot of the time I think he's just mucking about and trying to keep himself interested. I like Sheila too.

I like 5 but then I like sport so the mix suits me.
Phone ins tend to be annoying as they so often go for fuckwittery just to get the thing het up.
I love Peter Allen.
He reminds me of my dad

I love Shelagh Fogarty - and I think that Jane Garvey is COMPLETELY wasted on Radio 4 - she's so sparky and funny, and she just doesn't have the opportunity to be either on Woman's Hour. She must be home nice and early, though!

I agree ahundredbiros
he whips right around the annoyingfuckometer until he is back in amusing again.

Still can't bear him on tv though which DH finds hilarious
