Thanks, R4, for the title (again!).

I'm your temporary host while PseudoBadger is on her sabbatical / prison term / secret mission.

Old hands and complete newbies all welcome.

Spoilers (eg Radio Times descriptions of future programmes) not welcome.

When will Matt reappear? Before / during / after the wedding?

The floor is yours...

Does anybody else think Kate would be a perfect surrogate?
Justin is a piece of work isn’t he?

Agreed about Kate. She would be perfect but being Adam's half sister would be an ishoo, I suppose.

Well done and thanks for the new title R4 and Dx3 The temporary system is working well isn't it?

Adalind I'm not so sure about Kate and surrogacy ,she's so volatile she may well change when the baby's born and turn all mother earthy.

TeenTimesTwo · 02/10/2017 17:18

Kate would be prefect is much she seems to have no mothering instinct. But unbearable in so many other ways. They would be crazy to use her imo.

Imbroglio · 02/10/2017 17:21

Kate as surrogate/ egg donor would make the baby related to Adam.

I think it could be upsetting for Kate's children. That would have to be handled very carefully.

Adam needs to say get doesn't want all of this baby malarkey. It will all come to a head.

There is no way on earth TA is up to handling a surrogacy storyline. I am really really irritated with it already and they haven't even started. And breathe.

R4 · 02/10/2017 17:37

It would make it interesting if they did use Kate's egg because then the baby would be a descendant of Brine. I'm not sure who is going to run Home Farm in years to come -
Adam, then who?
or Ruari?
possibly Debbie, then who?
or unborn sprog?

I'd so like Ed to get a break for once

Ed? The 'contractor' who was turning down work the other day because "why should I help Bridge Farm when Johnny left them short staffed?" (Or words to that effect). Complete with whiny voice/hard done by air. He doesn't seem to be able to grasp the basics of his own business! He's a hobby farmer who can't afford to be. If he genuinely wanted to own his own home he'd follow Emma into the chicken factory or Rex into the taxi business. But Ed only wants to do what Ed wants to do and to hell with the consequences.

Kate wouldn’t actually have to tell her SA children. Noli is unlikely to stay in UK or long, and she can hide the bump when Skyping. I don’t recommend this, just that it is possible. I don’t see why Kate as surrogate is such a bad idea(if we ignore her personality and age). Like others say, it would create a link to Adam, Kate wouldn’t want to actually bring it up, and she seems healthy.

vango He's a hobby farmer who can't afford to be.

Yes I feel rather like that about Ed lately - Emma works her socks off taking every crappy job going and Ed wants to pick and choose and put their savings into his hobby farm.

Ed has had breaks - he had Oliver and Caroline sponsoring him through more than one business, buying a herd for him to manage. Ruth helped sort out the mess he made of the business. The whole family has what is effectively a grace and favour home courtesy of Oliver and Caroline. All the local farmers seem to give him first pickings of contract work instead of having regular larger contractors.

I wondered if the investment would go west and create a long painful break up with Emma. I hope it doesn't but its hard to see Ed suddenly acquiring business sense. Unless he lets Emma take over all the business with him just providing the stock expertise which might work.

I also think Phoebe would be quite sensible about Kate as surrogate. She’s got the measure of her and would accept if Adam and lan want to create a baby, then they need some help!

I hadn't considered that - competition for Ruari? Would Brian consider it a 'proper' grandchild, he has antiquated views on such things (unless they are his own mistakes)

The thing with Ed is he left school at 16 didn't he?
So no education from college on how to run a business.
Eddie isn't exactly a great role model for only doing carefully considered plans.
And I do feel he was a bit hard done by when Home Farm took on Johnny rather than Ed. He did go back and accept the job when Emma pointed out to him he couldn't lose the goodwill.

Ed is a farmer at heart, and can't give up on his dream in the face of reality. I really, really, want him to succeed.

TheAntiBoop · 02/10/2017 18:54

Agree that ed has actually had a lot of chances through Oliver but just isn't very capable. Leaving school at 16 isn't an excuse either.

Ultimately he needs Emma to do the business side for him

Report
Vango · 02/10/2017 19:03

He's 33 Teen. He's had more 'breaks' than most people I know. Talent spotted by Oliver. Given a job, a home, a heifer of his own.... Supported by Brookfield on the shearing/accounting front....

Considering his volatile past I'd say he's been bloody lucky already and if I hear him whinge one more time I'm going to break my radio!

I'm sure I remember Ruth pointing him at classes/evening classes in business. The local colleges do apprenticeships and other day release (as used by other cast members) and the NFU offer online training in the business side as well as toward technical education.

Will and Emma both left school at 16 but found college or part time training, as did Chris. Ed was never interested then but what surprised me was his unwillingness to build these business skills later when he did understand the importance of them

Yes, l wondered that about the phone call too. Also was trying to work out how soon she’d be back, depending on the nature of the emergency. Borsetshire to Glasgow is quite a distance. She only mentioned tomorrow’s clinic but what about Wednesday?
