Best radio station to wake up to as alarm clock?

ShyGirlie · 20/01/2016 22:13

Treated myself to a lovely DAB radio for my bedroom to use as a more pleasant alarm clock.

I need to wake up about 6.15am on weekdays, so wondering which radio station to set it to for the most enjoyable wake up - if that's possible!

  • preferably not music
  • don't really want news / politics. Bit harsh first thing in the morning!

Suggestions please! Can be digital or fm.

I know you said no news, but Radio 4 works for me. When Thought for the Day comes on, I get so cross that I get out of bed to turn it off.

BTW hope your DAB radio works, mine just plays bubbles at me.

Radio 4 here too. Until thought for the day when we have blessed silence for a couple of minutes (and then turn it back on again).

I have a very old Sony radio alarm which can only pick up about 4 stations. I have it set to Capital (Scotland) as it has the strongest signal and Des Clarke's voice makes me need to instantly get up and turn him off. Smile

I like 5live to wake up to, Nicky Campbell is very soothing first thing, though he doesn't actually start till 6.30.

What about your local bbc radio station. Some music, some news, if it's anything like ours, but not too full on like R4, or too lively like R1 or 2. We actually have Radio 2 if I'm in charge, or Radio 4 if it's DH. I don't mind the Today programme but I do find it a bit intense, especially if there is heavy news going on. I need a bit more fun to cheer me up in the morning!

I know what you mean about heavy / intense news! I think R4 will be my best bet, local radio stations not great. Thanks all!

I switched from the Today programme on R4 to Shaun Keaveney on 6music some years ago and find myself far happier for it. Thought for the Day in particular made me feel quite murderous - especially if it was Ann Atkins or Jonathan Sacks.

You could try world service as they have more of a range but still almost all speech. There is news, but you hear a much broader range of news from around the world.

Radio 4 wake up at 6.30
Radio 4, kitchen, breakfast, packed lunch making
Switch off Radio X in analogue car to Radio 4, switch to Radio 3 if reports are too graphic for 9 yo daughter on way to school.
Get to station and Radio 6 on train / walk to work on phone.
Radio 4 for Archers and comedy on way home.

Deffo Radio6 - when ours comes on its usually some 90s amazingness: memorable wake-ups include Bluetones, Ash, Placebo. It's like waking up 15!

And you get middle-aged shout outs. I love it! DH hates it

Another one who is either R4 or 6 Music. Generally R4 in the week and 6 Music at the weekend.

I know it's a zombie, but I clicked to say Radio 4, because Thought for the Day gets me out of bed to turn it off.....
Discovered I said EXACTLY the same thing 4 years ago.

And my DAB radio still plays mainly bubbles.

So why is Thought For The Day so widely disliked?

I've never actually heard it, so I'd love to know what provokes such negative reactions Hmm
