I do love this programme so many little gems. Often it's the things I think will be dull that turn out to be brilliant. I have it set to download podcasts and listen to it at the gym.

Did someone win their cooker in the studio and actually claim it?

I'm in.
Though my attendance may be erratic.

And can I be allowed to not like Jane Garvey as much as I do Jenni Murray?

Listening this morning as in taking the kids to see mum this on :(

The article on older lesbians is sort of sad. Sexuality was such a taboo - not sure it was worse for women than men though. Am also not sure it want more accepted than they seem to think. From my childhood in the 1970s I can recall several sets of spinsters who lived together and had done for life. I'm sure they weren't all long term house shares as of course I was told at the time.

Glad our kids generation will have an easier time.

Also the anti semitism stuff. Sort of shocking, but Jewish schools in the uk has always had security and someone needs to speak to the local Jewish primary where more that half the pupils are Muslim and it's all pretty fine.

My very radical elderly friend told me this week that she doesn't listen to Radio 4 at all as she finds it too twee.

I'm desperate to prove her wrong and looking for gems to show to her from the R4 scheduling!

From the article on older women's sexuality, I can only think that it would have been highly isolating at the best of times in the "olden days".

On the topic of antisemitism, I think that it's really sad. I don't understand why Jews are always targeted. It's not the everyday Jew/Christian/Muslim who is in power, but they feel the full effects of society. Felt sorry for the mum worried about her DC, but don't really think that they should be considering emigrating to Israel either as a result of recent events in Europe.

don't worry cutted, I listen fully only a few times a week, and DS 11mo) doesn't permit me to even start up the computer let alone listen to podcasts!

I love the Saturday edition too. I get a moment to cook and prepare Sunday's dinner with a cup of tea and the radio on loud as DH plays annoys with DS.

Forced arranged marriages;

I used to love it. But I find it all a bit 'worthy'and depressing now.

Arranged marriages, anti-semitism, female genital mutilation, getting old, cancer etc etc ... all very important and serious topics that need airing, but it's all so terribly, terribly bleak.

I'm sure a man's programme would allow themselves a bit more enjoyment?

I suppose the 'story' section is meant to be the light relief, but I can't stand all those arch middle class actors shouting at one another either (bit of an exaggeration but still).

And I can't actually make out half of what Jenni Murray is saying as she doesn't seem to ennunicate very clearly any more. And I like Jane Garvey but she sometimes comes across as being quite apologetic/uncomfortable at being there somewhow.

argh, sorry, enunicate should only have one 'n'

I know what you mean slow, except that I find the articles\ topics too short. They have about 3-4 topics every day and they're all so short and often superficial. I think that they should reduce the number of articles and even kill remove the 15min play at the end, which actually makes Women's hour 45 mins.

On another note, does men's hour on Radio 5 have a play at the end too?

Agree TeaAddict the play has to go! That would probably improve things quite a bit.

Not sure about men's hour ...will investigate.

The anti abortion woman on today came across really badly! So aggressive. And was it really necessary to call England a cesspool?

Interesting to have the two viewpoints but Jenny didn't really challenge either and they obviously thought it would be better not to let the two debate!!

You could almost 'see' Jenny doing Hmm at the woman from the anti abortion group. She came across as a deranged nutter.

Report
BuildYourOwnSnowman · 30/01/2015 12:00

Yes! She sounded like a stereotype which hardly helps their cause.

Jenny didn't pick her up on using the word murder or saying it was the worst human rights abuse ever. Not sure competitive human rights abuse ever really works as an argument.

And every time she was questioned about specific cases (rape/incest etc) she just said ' it's a slippery slope which will end in designer abortions' in an attempt not to look like a bitch for saying those women should have to keep the pregnancy. Very transparent.
