If I like Cabin Pressure, what other radio comedy should I check out?

Sort of a radio spin-off question -- have greatly enjoyed having the Cabin Pressure CDs in the car because they are great for long journeys and everyone who tends to be awake in the car (me, DH and 9yo DS) finds them very funny (and even younger DCs appreciate some of the broader jokes).

But there are only four series (pending this Christmas's final special) and I wondered what other series I've missed and we'd enjoy. Somewhere around here I have a CD set of the first series of Old Harry's game but I wasn't sure how child-friendly that would be. Any other suggestions?

Nothing is as good as Cabin Pressure, but the following are all nearly as good

John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme
Meet David Sedaris
Old Harry's Game
The News Quiz

10 year old DNiece loved Old Harry's Game - anything slightly adult went over her head. David Sedaris can be a bit more adult but the rat sketch has had kids in this house crying with laughter.

The following are worth a listen
clare in the Community
The Castle
In and Out of the Kitchen
Inspector Steine (good for kids as a bit slapstick)
Hut 33
ed Reardon
Baggage
The Maltby Collection

the Now Show used to be required listening but it's gone a bit off the boil.

Old harry's game, definitely.

Is he old enough for Hitchhiker yet?

cabin pressure is very unsophisticated, it's just humour based on the inadequacy and horribleness of the main characters.

steine and hut might do, as they are equally simple.

possibly reardon if the know some grouchy old men.

hhgtg and Harry are much more intellectual.

Thank you all -- I'll check out those suggestions (some of them are available as individual episodes on iTunes, so I can try them out and see what floats our collective boat. And I'll try to remember where I put OHG if it's not going to traumatise the children too badly.

I'd quibble over the description of the Cabin Pressure characters as inadequate and horrible, but that's probably a conversation for another time/place (probably over a pint somewhere).

And now I look at it, Hut 33 is written by a friend of a friend, so I'm probably obliged to get that Grin.

Love Ed Reardon but don't know how funny it would be to a 9 year old.

Not a comedy as such.... But check out Adam and Joe radio bbc6 podcasts... Sometimes a bit rude but we love them in the car! Kids find them hilarious!
We really miss them! Their shows have finished but podcasts still available last time I looked!! X

Get thyself over to radio 4 extra! Lots of brilliant stuff to be getting on with.

Bleak expectations is especially good

Am I allowed to suggest something my husband wrote? It's a time travel radio sitcom in the vein of Hitchhikers etc!

I love radio 4 extra - it's always on when I'm cooking or ironing and I love the mix of comedy/drama/quiz shows

DS is 14 now but he's loved Ed Reardon for quite a while. Both of mine have always loved I'm sorry I haven't a Clue, Just a Minute, the Now Show and the News Quiz. We spent part of a road trip howling at David Sedaris, I'd never heard of him before, I've got a couple of his audiobooks now though.

Scuttles off to check price on Cabin Pressure CDs.

Please do, GwenStacy. It's a long and growing list, but there's always room for more.

While we're at it, I rather liked Nebulous -- I might have to dig that out for a re-listen some time.

Fags, mags and bags. Silly and funny and sweet

Okay - here you go! www.abhott.com I may be biased, but it's pretty funny and has Robert Llewelyn in as well. Plus a small line from me in one episode. I like to think I just have then one line as my greatness would show everyone else up. Not that I was too nervous to do anymore…

anything slightly adult went over her head.

I agree with that - I listened to some replays of Radioactive recently and was a bit shocked by"let's have a mass debate". When I heard the original broadcasts, I was of an age where it could only have meant a big discussion, and now I think, "my parents let me listen?" - but then I didn't understand any double meanings, so it was fine that they did.

You only appear to be able to get Series 2 of Hut 33. Very odd.

do you have just william read by martin jarvis? not quite the same as sitcoms but brilliant for the car.

honestly not just for children, i can remember my grandfather taking us to school once and us being late because he was crying with laughter at one of the stories and couldn't get out of the car!

I adore Cabin Pressure - "I'm gluten-intolerant" - "I'll try not to be too gluten-annoying, then". And the episode where they drive Gertie by road to another airport, so they can take off. And the Travelling Lemon.

I definitely second 'Old Harry's Game', and 'Hut 33'. The other thing I would recommend is 'I'm Sorry, I Haven't a Clue' - the antidote to panel games. Again, some of the humour is a bit rude, but it went over my dses' heads. And 'One Song To The Tune Of Another' is hilarious. It's available on CD, and some of the recent episodes may be available on iPlayer too - I am not sure, I haven't checked.

Yes, we have quite a lot of Clue on CD (although I'm not entirely sure where... they seem to have gone astray in the last car changeover). I think my favourite OSTTTOA may be "Girlfriend in a Coma" to the tune of "Tiptoe Through the Tulips", but it's a close-run thing. And I miss Humph; Jack Dee does an admirable job but it's just not the same (also not the same without Willie, but on the other hand the guest star format adds something).

one of my favourite lines (so juvenile but it makes me laugh just thinking about it) is on birling day when he arrives and his wife comes later saying something like 'you can't park the car with the door on my side against the wall!' and birling just say 'can! did!'

I realise this might bring out nayayers because he does seem to polarise opinion but I do LOVE Count Arthur Strong.

I'm addicted to BBC4 extra on the iplayer. I was listening to an episode of 'The Young Postmen' with Ben Miller in it last night. It tickled me muchly.

Fags, mags and bags is great. Ooft etc.
