I'm listening to it now and absolutely howling. I'm supposed to be working and DS is with the CM and I just want to run down the road and grab him and hug him and never let him out of my sight again Sad

Ahhhhh. The mum sounds as nutty as a fruitbat.
Wish I'd been mislabelled as a child and sent to Australia!

The father sounds nuttier tbf

And just think of your poor mother if you'd been mislabelled!

Not as nutty as my grandma. They moved to London during the blitz as grandpa was in bomb disposal (obv death wish). Aparently, if they 'went' they'd all 'go together'.

Oh god, that's morbid! We are so not cut out for these times of national emergency anymore.

I'm listening to the 3rd one now, the big thing about half way through has just happened and I've, erm, got something in my eye, and I must make a cuppa. Ahem...

SO brilliant, I love poor little Ruthie, my heart bled for her in the 2nd ep.

The BIG thing? Sad, isn't it.

Report
Songbird · 02/02/2012 11:54

Oh no, the BIG thing came after the big thing I mentioned above. The most heartbreaking bit was the letters! Just the best thing I've heard/seen for ages.

Ahhhhh, appreciate it! I was quite addictive listening, wasn't it?

Don't know why they buried it during the day. Maybe something children would enjoy... Speaking of which, there is a Michael Morpurgo play on at the weekend - Priavte Peaceful on R4. DS has read a couple of his book - is it child friendy or all war and guts? Anyone know?

Report
MaryAnnSingleton · 02/02/2012 13:36

ds has read Private Peaceful - think it is quite sad..will listen on Saturday.

wahwahwah · 02/02/2012 13:38

Maybe not then. He got sad at bedtime the other night because he heard on the news about that school teacher who was found beaten to death. Took us ages to get him off to sleep.

aw bless- sensitive soul. I think kids would enjoy the 3 plays -the children in it are all pretty sassy

Ah, just catching up! Listened to parts 2 and 3 at work (I was off on Monday which is the only reason I caught it at all) and yes, I did think she'd be under the patio in the 2nd part - somehow the 'reality' was more depressing.

And part 3 - a great denouement, and the letters! Oh! I've recommended it to all my friends, it's such a shame it's only available for such a short while on listen again.

Radio 4 used to have really great plays on during the day but went 'off' for a while. This one had me glued to the radio!

Indeed. I was trying to remember this nothing what hooked me and I think it was the odd conversation the children were having and the unmistakable sound of the blitz - I'm a sucker for a good war story. It was also very easy to identify each character. I find a lot of the afternoon plays sort of meander in, all the characters sound the same and I can't be bothered to listen to work out who's who.
