Robust and reliable 3 wheel travel system?

Hi,

My wife has tasked me with being chief in charge of researching the travel system for our baby, due in March.

I am pretty much set on a three wheel 'All terrain pushchair' and am now after some recommendations as to which deserve further research. I know a few things that we definitely do want and a few things that we don't want / don't care about, which are below;

Definitely do want;

Must be robust, a brand with a known history of quality and longevity
Must be a travel system (or easily compatible)
Must be suitable for walks in the countryside
Flexibility for age, I would much rather buy one system to use until pram free, rather than one for new born requiring later upgrade
Flexibility for parent height, I am 6ft 3 and my wife is 5ft 2


Don't care about;

Folded size (we have a big boot and plenty of storage space at home)
Design / chicness / looks
Any fancy Dan gadgets (i.e. cupholders!)
Parent facing / outward facing
Having space for more than 1 kid in the future
Getting around shops or on buses, we do very little of that as we live out in sticks.
Cost... for now...

Basically, I am after a robust, practical, functional all terrain travel system and don't care about frills, gizmos or style!

I have a few that look to mostly fit the bill and would welcome any thoughts on these as well as recommendations for others to look at.

We live in the sticks

Bought an iCandy peach jogger (now called peach all terrain!) with DC1. Done 2 children and some serious off roading. Is still brilliant. Ended up also buying a peach blossom as can't double up the 3 wheeler and massively prefer the jogger. Brilliant to manoeuvre, easy to push even over rough ground.

Downside- takes up masses of boot room. Cot on the small side (no way will it do till 6 months).

I'd also look at the baby jogger range. They have the city mini gt which has non puncture all terrain tyres and an adjustable handle bar to suit your height. Then they have the more off road pumped up version called the elite which has bigger wheels and looks more like a jogging buggy. Both are suitable from birth with lie flat seats,or you can add a carry cot or car seat with adaptors. Best buggy website has some independent reviews and lots of photos for comparison. Good luck with your search.

I have ICandy Peach, the 4 wheel not the 3 wheel but I preferred it to the 3 wheel ones as they all had air tyres which can puncture. Also the 4 wheel can turn into a double, perfect for future proofing!

Ticks all of your boxes, extremely well built and will see you right through.

We bought a Mountain Buggy Urban with a carrycot for our PFB born in 2007 and it has been a brilliant workhorse for our family. We have 3 children it's the only buggy we've ever used. Never wanted to switch to a lightweight umbrella fold as they're not nearly as comfortable for the child and certainly do not push as beautifully as our MB. It's still in perfect working order and we've just finished using it.

Totally bomb-proof, I can't recommend highly enough!

Mountainbuggy. Mine is a 2000 model, if necessary my tall 5 year old can easily fit into it. Practical, comfortable and longlasting.

Out n Abut Nipper 360!

I had many prams/ buggies over the years, and this was my favourite by far. DD was 1 when we got it, so I can't comment on its comparability with car seat as a travel system.

Mountain buggy. I have the swift and have used it every day for nearly 3 years with my youngest dd. Wish I'd bought it for the first. I mostly use it around urban settings but do take it for walks and the wheel size means the off roading is not as good as other three wheelers. And useless on sand. So I'd probably go for the next size up (is that the terrain?). Just consider how heavy it is for chucking in and out of the car. I am in and out of the car a lot and eventually bought a mountain buggy nano as it's so light and easy to manage even compared to the swift which is a very light pram. I Still use the swift direct from home and for days out, so most days, but am glad I invested in another for convenience and speed, which may not be a worry for you anyway with just one to worry about .

I have the Jane trider. Absolutely delighted with it. Really good quality, feels really well designed and built. Very very flexible options re travel system in you can have lay flat car seat, normal car seats, normal carry cot or an auto carry cot (carry cot that can be used in the car, great if you do any journeys longer than a couple of hours).
I love the fact it is so easy to change from parent facing to forward facing. I still have my 16 month old parent facing 99% of the time but can flip it in a second so we've used it as a highchair etc.
We bought ours this time last year from precious little one in their huge sale which is on again now. Highly recommend!

I would be careful about going for something like the out & about nipper for a newborn. For it to be sold as suitable from newborn, alll it needs is lie flat seat. In reality, a newborn is not comfy or safe bouncing around in an off road buggy like that

I had a Jane 3 wheeler with air types when dd was born nearly 11 years ago. We lived in the highlands of Scotland with lots of dog walking through woods and it was amazing, didn't fold small but we went for miles with this thing and she was very comfy. I don't know what their equivalent is now but it was a great brand. Also look for good waterproof covers and consider a decent sling if you are walking lots cross country (take a walking stick if it's slippery, nothing worse than slipping with a baby strapped to you).
