Pushchair for farm!

MrsSpencerReid · 28/03/2014 14:27

Hi, my mil has asked me to get a pushchair for her to use one their farm, it needs to be sturdy and have solid/foam wheels, NOT air filled. Currently we are using a quinny buzz bit it is on its last legs and has air filled wheels. I was thinking along the lines of a baby jogger city mini gt or some sort of icandy? Anyone got any recommendations or ones to avoid? Thanks Grin

just out of interest, why not air filled wheels? I've got a really ancient phil and teds. it's taken a total battering across fields and at the stables (I'm not talking a neat concreted yard, just piles of mud and ruts) and not had a problem. It was a freebie off a friend who had got it as a hand me down. I think it's had use from 7 children over about 10 years. the only things that are a pain, and are age related, is that the hood pops off sometimes, and the basket has sort of stretched so hits the ground if it's quite rough.

Another one asking why not air tyres?

We had a Graco 3 wheeler which went everywhere on our farm - dcs spent hours strapped in during milking or lambing Smile

It dealt with practically every terrain and was also robust enough to throw in the back of the landrover (minus dc) without being precious about it.

Don't know if they even make them now. I know dh was holding out for a proper Landrover 3 wheel all terrain buggy but they were ÂŁÂŁÂŁs

Because we've had puncture after puncture with the quinny, halfway down a lane is not the place to get one!! It's a pain in the bum!!Grin

You can get some orange gloop which you put inside the inner tube which stops punctures.

Can't remember what it's called but dh has put it in the dcs bike tyres cos he was fed up of forever mending punctures. Think he got it from somewhere like Halfords of its any help?

I've done that, it didn't really help, I must be doing something wrongConfused

Just asked dh (puncture master!!) and he said to check there is nothing stuck in the tyres which could be making a rough patch in the inside which could then rub a hole in the inner tube?

Or it may be that you need new inner tubes as they can get perished and thin and therefore puncture more easily as they get old?

Might be worth asking at a bicycle repair shop - seems a shame to get rid of a buggy cos of punctures Wink

Have a look at the Jane trider, very sturdy. Can get them second hand for a couple of hundred, will last forever.

Right, I will investigate, the frame is starting to collapse it's an 06 model so very well used!! Tbh I didn't expect it to last this long so was expecting to have to replace it at some point, it will need to last at least another 5 years Smile

We've bought a icandy apple 2 pear, it's got solid wheels as standard and the frame is pretty strong and sturdy. not sure if it's still on offer but John lewis had an anniversary package which worked out near on half price with everything that it came with Grin

If you want sturdy and non foam wheels then you can't go far wrong with a Baby Jogger City Elite. It is one of the best pushchairs there is. If you want even more off road, then look at the Summit too. I think it would be better for you over rough ground than the GT although if a Buzz has worked for you in the past, then maybe GT wheels would be enough? I think you could look everywhere and not end up with better than any of the Baby Joggers for solid wheels and functionality.
I certainly wouldn't send you off to buy an iCandy for a farm. Slime in air tyres can work well which does open up the field a bit more.

Out and about nipper is my vote too. It's brilliant on muddy country roads/ground, easy to clean, lightweight and packs down small in the car.

My Baby Jogger Summit has been amazing over some really rough terrain - I was really quite surprised at how easy it was to push through mud, snow, beaches etc.

Our baby jogger city mini GT has been great on farms - the suspension is a bit better in the standard mini, but the GT has much sturdier wheels, which swung it for us. We visited my sis on the farm a week ago and DS happily slept from shed to field in it!

It's not that cheap, but does last well - and because of that you may be able to get some good 2nd hand ones too (they've just changed the model slightly, which might also work in your favour)

I would also advocate the Baby Jogger Summit X3 - it is fabulous. Air filled tyres but mine are thorn resistant and really are heavy duty. I drag it over the muddy fields here in Devon and it goes like a dream, practically rolls itself over the beach too. Would buy from //www.pushchairs.co.uk They gave me excellent service and I have no conflict of interest apart from satisfied customer!

Would also advocate the Summit X3 for heavy off road but if air filled a real no no then the Elite is almost as good off road and a really snazzy buggy these days. Just for info though //www.justkidsthings.co.uk is slightly cheaper than pushchairs.co.uk!

We have a summit for our farm/country shows etc. Its brilliant, and I've never had a puncture.
