Possible to buy just a Pushchair frame?

I have a mama and papas pramette from ds1 which was ok but I wish I had got a travel system instead. Can't afford a new pram but we are looking into a new car seat as I hated the mama and papas one. I was heavy, difficult to use and ds looked really uncomfortable in it.

I am just wondering if I could pick up a cheap pram frame that the car seat could clip onto. Second hand or something. I was forever disturbing ds because I had to take him out of his car seat and put him in his pram.

Anyone done this? Is it worth it or even possible?

You can usually buy the constituent parts of a travel system separately, but I'm not quite sure what you are trying to do. Do you want a frame that the car seat you already have will clip onto? I doubt it will fit safely and properly onto anything other than the pilko pramette one.

Also if this is for a newborn, they shouldn't be in the car seat all the time - they should be lying flat. I deliberately didn't get a travel system so that I couldn't put the baby straight out of the car onto the frame still in the car seat. It isn't good for them.

I am getting a new car seat but keeping the old pram as I can't afford a new one but would like the option of not having to wake the baby up all the time as I had to do this with ds1 and found it quite stressful. I will still use the pram a lot.

I might be stressing about nothing, ds1 was an awful sleeper and I really hated waking him up.

All the baby car seats are heavy and bulky tbh!

Yes you can pick up very cheap pushchairs on ebay for that purpose. I once sold a tatty fabrics but perfectly good frame jane on ebay and the people who bought it were using it for just that reason to clip the car seat onto.

Why didn't you just clip the m&P car seat onto the pramette frame btw?

What car seat were you thinking of getting? Most car seats are pretty heavy as CarGirl has pointed out, but I think that Maxi-Cosi (I haven't had one, but my cousin did) are one of the lighter ones and do very well in safety tests. They will fit onto lots of different frames, but the one that springs to my mind are the quinny Zapp which you could get pretty cheaply 2nd hand, but lots of places have on offer atm depending on how much you want to spend.

Or Argos Clearance Outlet on ebay has this Britax seat here which IIRC fits on most Britax pushchair frames.

How much are you thinking of spending as tbh when I was looking at buying just a car seat I found that literally for just a little bit more I could buy a whole travel system.

Also don't blame you for not wanting to use the M&P car seat, I had one for ds2 and hated it so much, switched to the Britax first class I had for ds2 very quickly.

M&P car seats are junk.
Maxi cosi are pretty good and very light.
Graco are also very comfy for baby, but a little heavier.

If you are just around town, and only going out for short stops, just get a zapp frame, they are super light, cheap to buy second hand and the maxi cosi fits on. Then for longer trips you can use the pramette and because the zapp folds so small, you can probably fit both in the boot. Not an ideal solution, but will prob. work OK for you.

Thanks for all the replies.

My sil has a graco which is much lighter and just clips onto a base. The one I had took ages to get in and out of the car as I had to fiddle with lots of straps etc. The pram I have doesn't have just a frame part , you can't take the pram bit off if that makes sense.

Maybe I should go and talk to someone at mothercare. Maybe it's not worth it. I was a bit depressed after ds1 and I found it difficult to go out and about and this time I just want everything to feel really easy so I can make myself go out more.

X post, sounds like the plan I had in my head sickoftheholidays. Looks like maxi cosi is the best option. I will look on eBay to see if they have zapp frames.

Thanks, I am not sure really, I actually don't care in a way I am just so keen for everything to be super easy but DH does not want us to spend money and he is right as we can't afford it.

I was going to buy a new car seat and maybe just get the frame second hand if such a thing is possible.

If your dp isn't keen on spending money can you borrow or buy a car seat of someone you know. That way you would know the seat is safe and has never been in an accident, but you wouldn't have the large cost of a new seat.

TBH I have always felt that with car seats and pushchairs you are using them everyday, so it makes sense to buy what will make your life easier as long as you can afford it. As this is your 2nd dc presumably you won't have to buy things like a cot etc so could you justify it to DP by pointing out that you will be spending less than you had to spend on your ds.

Neeps - I have a zapp frame if you want it. its in the loft at the moment, I would have to check the condition and make sure all is working and safe but I wouldnt want more than £30 including postage for it.
Car seat wise you want the maxi cosi cabrio fix and a non isofix base. You can pick up both for around £50 second hand on preloved or gumtree. I wouldnt have a car seat thats been posted/couriered as I know what they do to parcels so unless its boxed in those polystyrene peanuts, it wouldnt be safe.

Hope that helps.

On your prammette, set it up forward facing. Lift the fabric on the seat part and look underneath at the side, there is a clip on each side that pops up and that is what the car seat attaches to, no need to take anything off!

I actually used a graco car seat on a pliko prammette, it was wedged in and hooked over the bumper bar. Obviously you have to be very careful going down curbs but you shouldn't have your baby in a car seat for more than 2 hours max anyway it's not good for them.

You can buy graco travel systems dirt cheap on ebay, you want the mirage though not one of the huge monsters.

Here is a photo of the pramette with the car seat attached - small photo on the left

gracos aren't the safest car seat in an accident, I had one only because I had the rear seat belts were freakishly short and it was the only car seat that would fit that car. My others all had a rock a tot (different car then)

i would go for a zapp frame if its just for nipping around the shops,it folds tiny, there are always plenty second hand ones on ebay cheaply (under £50).
then go for a maxi-cosi cabriofix carseat, everywhere has sales on just now as the fabrics will be changing for the new season,so you should be able to get a good deal on one of the discontinued fabrics.
if you can afford it then the maxi-cosi base is fab (about £90 new though) means you dont have to strap the seat in everytime, which is handy if you have another little one to keep an eye on,

i found i used my pram 3 times in the first 4 months(crappy winter),as the only time i was out in the town was to do the drop of/collect from playgroup so i always used the carseat and chassis,SO handy.
