Can you "convert" a ceiling lampshade to fit a lampbase?

I bought a lovely big lampshade for our living room and got DP to make a huge, chunky wooden base for it.

Trouble is we now think the lampshade must be for a ceiling fitting as the metal bit inside doesn't fit in the lampbase fitting -whereas you normally unscrew the plastic fitting (that the bulb goes into) sit the metal ring of the shade over it and then screw back together, its too big!

Anyone had this problem and solved it?

Can you buy some sort of converter kit?

Measure the diameter of the ring needed then find something that you can use as a washer...a small throw away lampshade , cut the metal ring off and use that for example.

Thanks somewhathorrified -I think thats going to be Plan B.

Plan A - DP has been sent off to the DIY shop and an electrical suppliers to see if there is anything available over the counter.

You can buy packs of lampshade discs (usually sold in packs of 3).

Essentially they are metal rings which make the ring smaller
