Crown paint colours? Dark blue and ...

I hate my sitting room (see previous posts) and have decided that a coat of paint might make it look a bit better on a budget. A pic of the chimney breast wall is on my profile and I fancy painting the chimney breast itself in Crown Paints Period range Ballgown which is a dark blue.

The question is, what to go for on the other walls, I love pure brilliant white but think the contrast might be too stark? The other thing is would you paint just the chimney breast or the whole wall, alcoves and all? I'm planning on leaving the shelves themselves oiled wood though.

Any opinions welcome!

I love the dark blue but would do only the breast itself, not the whole wall, and not the alcoves. The other walls I would do a dark cream, not white.
Oiled wood shelves are lovely.

Def do the sides as well - it gives you a feeling of depth to the alcoves, iyswim. I did the same to my chimney, but its sage green, with pale cream walls. And red cushions. Bit 'interior-designy' for me, but then the cushions end up on the floor and the walls all scuffed anyway. That's 3 boys for ya.
