I'm looking for a new sofa ..... please help

For our family room. A three seater with wow factor. I don't want one of those beige chenille ones, nor leather. I want something stunning and comfortable. Perhaps a bright velvet?

Anyone seen any nice ones?

they had some lovely jewel colour velvet sofas last time I was in Habitat. But can't see them on the website.

I was the same as you and said "NO!" when my husband wanted a leather one like everybody has. It'll be the nasty flock wallpaper of the seventies all over again in a few years!

I'm a bit twitchy about sofas atm, having orderd one, paid for it and was a fortnight off delivery when ....

... furniture company went into receivership.

For goodness sake make sure you pay on credit card as if it all goes wrong you'll get your money back. Pheww !

Jasper Conran did a lovely red velvet love seat that I fell in love with a couple of years ago. Didnt suit our room though.

I was in John Lewis last night and saw this swoonworthy sofa (ignore the rather pompous and fussy cushions as the lines of the sofa are really simple and lovely. But it's ££££

Has anyone had a sofa reupholstered? If yes, how much did it cost including fabric?

sweeds, my uncle is an upholsterer, and he's more expensive than your run of the mill argos type things. but by looking at your last post he'd prob work out cheaper for you. an important thing is to have a good quality frame thou I believe. A lot of them thou will do free estimate for you.

(he's done mum & dads btw and it's come out lovely, they've had the same frame for approx 15 years and have had it recovered once)

Noddy - I'd have to wear a kaftan to sit on that.

DP is 6' 2" so the sofa needs to be reasonably high off the ground otherwise it's hopeless for him.

thesouthsbelle - We are in Herts..... shame not nearer.

I might ring a local upholsterer and ask about redoing the cushions and covering my old sofa as it's a good one, a Wesley Barrell and a v nice shape. Just knackered - understandable as I bought it for my first flat 23 years ago!

I recently got a quote for a little lumpy edwardian 2 seater we have with legs. Quoted 700 quid plus fabric It does need respringing but it is just going to have to stay lumpy and threadbare unfortunately.

I worked for 2 master upholsterers years ago and often the cost of fabric plus repairs and recovering was high but the results were stunning as the original furniture was usually top quality.I would look into it and then have a look at Andrew Martin for lush velvets

I've just found a lovely striped velvet. Apparently I would need 16 metres for the large sofa and at £53.00 per metre that's £901 just for the fabric.

I blame the EU and handing back the Empire.

I've just phoned the upholsterer and it would be £900 for the reupholstering, including replacing the feather seat and back cushions. Plus £900 for the fabric, less if I chose a cheaper fabric.

It is marginally cheaper than buying a Duresta sofa new. And reupholstering feels a nicer way to go...... and greener.

Maybe I'll phone another upholsterer or two and see if I can drive down the price a bit.

designers Guild do a lovely striped velvet called bellini but prob quite pricey!

I'd really like to have it covered in bright fuschia pink velvet. But DP and 3 sons would probably refuse to sit down. Maybre bright raspberry red would be nice though?
