Is it normal...

is it normal to let buyers come round to the house before exchange? We have had the survey done and it has recommended one point and the buyers have asked to come round on Monday with the roofer specialist - is this a normal request? Why do the buyers need to come round? I just feel it is an excuse for them to have another look round the house. Any opinions gratefully received.

I've done it with each house I have bought - have wanted to check curtain sizes, in some cases get an expert opinion on things that have come up etc

I went and looked round my house between agreeing to buy it and the official stuff being completed - it was a chance to check out some practicalities like curtains etc. If they need/want to do some work on the roof, I'm not surprised they want to start getting quotes in asap so that they can get on with the work.

We have always had buyers do this, although we haven't ever done it ourselves. It does make you sweat a bit though, in case they see it through fresh eyes and realise they don't like it grin

Perfectly normal, if you don't it may suggest you know there is a problem and don't want it highlighted.

I dont think they would need to invent an excuse to have another look round the house.
If they wanted to have another look they could have just asked?

They are spending hundreds of thousands of pounds buying a house, and you think they shouldn't be allowed to look at it again? hmm

Rebeccaj Wed 05-Aug-09 14:24:08

Yes - ours have been round several times, and when we bought it we came round, to show my mum and to measure up! Perfectly normal.

Thanks all. I am worrying they will not love the house when they come back & will decide to pull out. I just want to exchange asap!!

Of course it's normal. We rent our current house and went back after 'agreeing to it' just to measure to make sure what furniture fitted where.

The house we're currently buying is empty. DH has been in with plumbers, electricians, builders the lot. The owner doesn't mind as they know we need to plan before.

TBH, if they hadn't let us go in after agreeing to buy, I wouldn't sign the contract. Makes it a big risk and means things will be more difficult when you buy/move.

Very normal and I would worry if I wasn't allowed round before exchange thinking things were being hidden from me.

randomtask Wed 05-Aug-09 14:28:00

I don't think they'll change their mind-they've paid for the survey!!

Every time I look at the house we're buying I get more excited about what I'm going to do with it.

So I'm sure it's a positive thing, don't worry. [big 'house selling/buying is horrible isn't it', hug]

We did this with our last flat. There were a lot of issues on the survey which would actually have justified pulling out but because we loved the flat, we arranged to go round again with people who knew what the work involved so we could work out timescales and budgets for things like rewiring the entire place and dealing with rotten windows. If the sellers had made a fuss about us going round, we would probably have withdrawn the offer.

Thanks guys, will be desperately cleaning to make sure the house is show home material again (like when we had it on the market) & hope they love it as much as they did. Good luck to you all

I'm sure it'll be fine SU.

NoseyHelen Wed 05-Aug-09 15:47:18

Perhaps you've made them feel that they need an excuse?

We've exchanged on our sale and the buyers have not been around since that first short viewing - we're surprised they haven't wanted another nosey around and can't imagine that we'd have had a problem with it if they'd come around. I've been keeping the hous tidy in case they surprise us and want to come around at short notice.

Umlellala Thu 06-Aug-09 10:06:10

I'm sure it will be fine! I went and saw ours last week and made me MORE excited...

This house buying/selling is so stressful, isn't it!

I've been round to see the place we're buying once since our offer was accepted, to measure up for curtains and take some pictures so we had some reference for where our furniture is going to go.

Our survey has been done since then and they've recommended we get a damp specialist in - I may well ask to go round again as there are a couple more things I'd like to check. I certainly don't expect the place to be in show home condition and can't see why the owners would worry unless they've trashed it in the meantime!
