My friend is moving there from Scotland with her dh's job and has no idea where is good place to look for a flat. I think they will be renting at first. Where is nice and where is best to avoid? TIA

My son is at university there, which is on the eastern edge of town - I would avoid that area, as you could well end up with students as neighbours.

(When they signed the tenancy, the landlord told them he didnt care "what they got up to" in the house as long as the rent was paid. Needless to say, the landlord lives miles away.)

Thanks unavailable - always good to know - I was a student once and I would not have wanted to be my neighbour......

We;ve just moved and are near the North station (handy for commuters). Lexden is meant to be the posh bit. New Town has rough parts but some are fine as far as I can see. Or there are lots of pretty villages around, plus the seaside (Holland, Frinton)

Wivenhoe. Lots of students but mostly well-heeled commuters and villagey types; 15 mins drive from town centre, lots of great pubs and decent localshop or two. The rivetr is there as well and there is a station which has a train to London.

(Loved Wiv when I was a student)
