I am in the middle of doing up my hallway and i'm having a dilema with the stair.

I say - Carpet runner with white painted edges and brass carpet rods.

DP says - sanded down with varnish to match the doors, skirting etc.

Please help me decide???

Uncarpeted is incredibly slippy - runner definitely.

uncarpeted also very noisy.
we have kept carpets to a minimum in the lentileater household (serious dust mite allergy) but have one on the stairs.
I've done both, trust me.

wood looks nicew but is so noisy so the runner

I have the carpet runner/brass rod/white paited edges. It is lovely. I'd imagine un-carpeted stairs would be noisy to walk on, espacially noisy with DCs charging around on.

Say the word and I'll put a picture up for you.

grin - I win, yippeeee!!!

Lentileater - same as our house, only carpets at the minute are the stairs and our bedroom.

I think a nice carpet runner will look much better than varnish. Will need to show dp this thread now!

Ooooohhhhhhhh, very nice, I like it. Ours at the moment has got cheap, nasty grey cord stuff on that hasn't even been fitted properly (previous owner!!)

Can't wait now, going to be lifting the old carpet tomorrow and sealing the gaps cause they squeek like hell just now!

CherryChapstick Sat 27-Sep-08 19:57:17

You don't have to say it's nice. I know the gaudy pattern isn't everyone's bag.
Our local carpet fitter told us to select the carpet design we wanted and then they sent it away to be bound at the edges.

I think it's a nice pattern, we had similar in the old house (doesn't show stains!) We've seen some lovely ones on ebay. There's a nice brown/cream/grey candy stripe one. They sell a package of the runner, 14 rods and landing carpet for £180 delivered whcih I think is a bargain. It comes bound as well. DP thinks that is expensive (it is compared to a tin of varnish) but I think it is very reasonable considering you get the landing carpet too.

There are really nice stripey runners about.

Somewhere like Roger Oates I htink?

CherryChapstick Sat 27-Sep-08 20:04:14

That is well cheap!
My carpet was over £400, the rods were £20 each X13.
The runners won't be real brass at that price though.

littlerach - they are gorg but I don't have anywhere near that amount of money to spend on a carpet. I can dream though!! grin

littlerach Sat 27-Sep-08 20:06:42

Yes, I dream too!

Twixabix Sat 27-Sep-08 20:09:38

cherry - This is the link to the ebay one

CherryChapstick Sat 27-Sep-08 20:13:10

Bloody hell!
That is very cheap. You'd be silly not to get it.
