Swim spa or hot tub?

We would like a substantial hot tub as we have a big family. Apparently some of the swim spas can be heated up to 40. And also then let to cool down and used for exercise. Anyone have any experience? Or brands to look at? Or should we just go for a hot tub?

Swim spa is good for little kids but not really big enough to do a stroke. You could get a floaty though

Swim spa but they’re much more expensive than a hot tub

We were going to get one last year but other things happened. It was about 5m with a resistance machine for swimming

We got one, a Master Spa Challenger 19 (it has a water depth of 4' and 15' long with a small hot tub at the end). It is definitely fine to swim in. If you swim slow breast stroke, the tether belt is great, my daughter puts the current on low and does her "swam swim" (head above water) for absolutely ages in it while listening to her podcast. If you swim front crawl and lift your arm beyond your waist then you can use the resistant current which is plenty fast enough even for competitive tri-athletes (it is better than pool training as no tumble turn is needed) though the rushing water can sometimes get into your nose so you'll need a nose clip. Kids love it, loads of them have been in and there's no better way to entertain them, tired them out too! As a large hot tub, it'll be very expensive to heat to high temperature but it is certainly possible.
