Gravel!

I’ve been building my own driveway because I can’t get anybody out before end next year 🙄🙄🙄

Can any just recommend a place where I can get cheap or discounted gravel? Trying hard to get this done on a budget! I’m going to need 50m2 coverage so really want to get cheap gravel if possible

Whatever you get, make sure it’s a larger size gravel. If it’s small and light then the local cats will use it as a litter tray.

First you need to work out how much you need. Then Google 'bulk gravel [town]' and see what comes up.

Builders merchants, give them a call and ask for a quote, you'll be paying cash not account. You will need 3 metre cubed dumpy bags.

I’m looking at £600 on the gravel itself, am compacting my sub base today 🙌

I am going to get this done for £1k I think - the quite was £6k but I’m scared if screwing or up just seems like a gamble

We bought a huge amount of slate chips a month or so ago. Found many places to be out of stock of these types of things. Prices vary greatly too

Our purchase was not for a drive but for landscaping. We did used to have a gravel drive - which we out in and later replaced with block paving. The gravel was a night mare as too small stones.

Got into shoes and wrecked our wood flooring inside our entrance hall

Got into the wheels of our various cars and caused damage

Even with a barrier of some bricks at the end of the driveway, gravel continually went behind the ricks, to sidewalk and street.

Look at local independent builders' merchants. They tend to be cheaper and more helpful than the big chains. We have a good one here that delivers free, too - even small items like drainpipes- no minimum order either.

Builders merchants who deliver it in builders sacks. Works out much cheaper than buying individual small bags.

Local builders yard here too. You'll always need more than you think and don't forget the ground cover to stop weeds coming through.

I used Gravelmaster for ours. They were OK.

Cheaper if you err on the side of lots of MOT mix then a thinner layer of gravel - makes a much better surface too.

Sounds obvious, but get the right gravel!

Avoid well rounded river gravels which just roll around on each other, or you'll forever be finding the gravel escaping into the street or onto the lawn and flowerbeds.

For a driveway you want something with more angular bits of stone which will interlock and stay in place better.

If cost is a factor then the best option is likely to depend on where you are in the country. Bulk aggregates are cheaper if they are sourced locally, because a big fraction of the cost is transport - and the carbon footprint is better too.

You may want to consider using a stabilised gravel system. You lay down these kind of honeycomb mats. You place them on top of your base. Usually they clip together and not complicated. Then you add the gravel on top. It stops the gravel sliding down off your driveway onto the street and also makes it usable for pushchairs/wheelchairs etc.

Agree with previous comment about picking slightly larger gravel. The little chips will be used by local cats and also stick in the tread your shoes and you end up tracking it all into your house and car.

I did suggest this but then thought it might be really obvious? I need 6cm of gravel so was going to do small mot first the. The posh stiff on top.
Would this work?

Contact quarries directly if you can make use of at least 20 tons tipped from the lorry. It gets massively cheaper than buying ton bags.
