Kitchen cabinets - French Grey Mid (LG) or Cornforth White (F&B)?

I have painted reasonable sized samples and am still quite torn.

This would be for the perimeter cabinets (including a run of tall cabinets - so substantial). Natural oak flooring (so there will be warmth).

  • Cornforth White seems more beige. Top left.
  • French Grey Mid seems to be slightly fresher. Bottom middle.

(Ammonite is left, LG French Grey bottom right, Hague Blue top right). Bottom two things are worktop samples. Right is shirting - which I am thinking of for walls.

These are taken in artificial light. Should take some tomorrow in natural light.

I definitely prefer cooler colours so I'd personally chose the French Grey Mid. However grey is so "now", I think the beigey Cornforth might date less? Sorry that's no help!

@IamnotwhouthinkIam it helps reassure me that my indecision is maybe understandable... They are both really lovely in sightly different ways...

Oh I’m having the same conundrum! Currently have a freestanding larder in F&F Purbeck Stone and I’m trying to choose a colour got the new units that goes. Cornforth is one of my shortlist, but not sure if it’s too similar to Purbeck. I’ve not even got onto tiles and wall colours yet! No advice but good luck!

Cornforth white - it's a great cool beige, will look less dated.

Cornforth White- true greys look awful with wood.

Putting the samples together influences your perception.
I suggest doing A4 sample of each colour, sticking them up around the room looking at them and moving them throughout the day. You will then narrow down to what effect is achieved in various conditions of light and shade.

I am very indecisive and find this helps me to narrow down to what I really want.

Ive got a combination of worsted, purbeck stone and ammonite on units - all work well together and look very subtly different.

I really like greys, and was ready to vote for the grey, but I actually really like the Cornforth White - looks like a great true neutral beige in the photo and looks good with the warm wood. The grey looks to have green undertones to me in that photo?

So to sum up Cornforth white for me. Smile

I also like Cornforth White over a big area and I think it's easy to live with over a big area.

I had it in a north facing living room in my last house and it went from a true grey to a neutral beige depending on the time of the day, more neutral under electric light. We also had it on a built in bench seat in our kitchen that extended up to the ceiling in a south facing room and it was much more of a true grey.

What direction is the room facing and are you wanting a grey grey or something more neutral?

That medium grey is well on the way out, while the lighter more beigey grey is more modern - don’t go with the medium grey! And don’t do Hague Blue either, it’s everywhere just now. The new thing is either dark green or even dark red. But I think Cornforth White is more neutral and less likely to date quickly.

Thank you, some really helpful opinions Smile

Here are some photos, in daylight, on-site (not the actual room, but one with the same aspects and same light levels / windows)

Top one shows the units in the West facing position, bottom in the South facing position - will have units in both those positions. Taken on an oak table.

Cornforth White and French Grey Mid look very similar in natural light (most difference in artificial light).

Can’t buy into green or red I am afraid: love blue (realise it is common and dated already). Must admit that Hague blue is looking darker than expected. Could buy into a darker grey for the island, BUT worried about grey overload... @Shesaysso, would you be willing to share a photo or two please?

If you're keener on the beigey end of things, I really like Shaded White and Shadow White from F+B. I also like LG's Slaked Lime and Portland Stone in all their shades.

It’s always so well worth moving samples around and viewing against different walls in both light and shadow.

All low Chroma, near neutral colours like these, can be prone to colour shift in certain imbalanced light.

Near neutrals from this Hue Family neighbourhood may show a little touch of peachiness to their warmth occasionally, as they are so close the Yellow-Red Hue Family.

In lighting which spikes more in the blue-violet wavelengths they can even flash purple-blue at times.

It doesn’t happen in every room for sure, but you won’t know how they will behave for you unless you test them in different parts of your own space, in the varying qualities of light available to it.

We have Cornforth White - including on a run of full height cupboards. We have oak floor and black granite worktops. I absolutely love it. It is warm, clean and modern enough looking without beige overload. Our kitchen is not overly bright though, which might affect the colour considerably.

Slaked lime is great, we have it on kitchen walls.

@colette100 and thank you from me too! Star It is great to know this information. Smile

I am gravitating towards Cornforth White. Will try to look at other island colours, but a dark blue is still favourite.

Plan for walls is “all white”. A feature wall could be tempting (I started another thread on that).

We have F&B Ammonite in the hall above the dado rail and LG mid French Grey in the sitting room and looking at them now I can’t see much of a difference.

I also like a mix of pale Grey and dark blue in the kitchen and I agree Hague blue does appear quite dark! I got some Andrew Martin www.andrewmartin.co.uk/paint paint samples a little while ago but I haven’t tried them yet - looking at them in the jars for the pale grey I like Nimbus Cloud and Masai Mist and for the blue I like Skipper and Nantucket Blue - they are both much lighter than Hague Blue.
I have LG Pale Lupin on the bathroom cabinet and a freestanding wardrobe in the bedroom - it’s lovely but I can’t have it in the kitchen as well.
