What needs doing before/after moving?

Should I sort out some stuff before we go not after? I need to tell the council that we're moving but not sure if I can notify them already of the date we've to be out of here and in the new place? I think it's all done online now so not sure if I can add the dates already.

Have sorted out broadband although it's a faff (thanks Virgin). Assuming that I need to inform energy supplier and arrange new supplier for the rental place before we go?

Have never done this before and a bit unsure! Thanks for any help.

Sort the post office redirect before, can be done online but takes a few days to start.
Have just seen you can sort TV license beforehand too (online). Last time I moved at short notice so everything was done after but hoping to be more organised this time...

Read meters of place moving out of and new place as moving in and note down. Get in touch with both suppliers to confirm date hand over took place

Do same for council taco and other utilities.

I wasn't sure from your post if you're moving to purchased or rented accommodations.. More to do if moving to purchased.

Check you've cancelled old direct debuts and set up new for rent or mortgage. Cancel subscriptions or change delivery address to the new one.

Send out change of address cards or emails to friends and family.

Regularly check your online banking for about months to ensure no money is going to old place or bill so McNeal ll the new one so rep being paid

Get a book write a to do list as there are lots of people you need to inform. Last time I moved I also did it in writing also just to make sure. I'm not sure how far you are moving but doctors, dentist, hospital vets etc. Also don't forget to change your online shopping addresses Amazon etc.

Thanks everyone, that's really helpful. We're going to be renting this place for a while and then buying once the market has calmed down.

Note book would be a good idea, I'm so used to putting everything in my phone calendar but sometimes it doesn't notify me in time. It's in the same town so a (hopefully) easy move.

Do I need to cancel the direct debit for my mortgage payments, or does that happen once the lawyer has done all the house sale stuff? I've no idea about all this.

Do I need to inform DVLA for a short term move? I just got a new driving licence last year after I changed my name when I got married. Only planning on being in this rental 6-9 months tops and then buying somewhere. Will they send out 3 new licences for free or will I need to pay? Not sure how that works with all the changes.

@FingersXrossed You need to inform DVLA . I personally phoned the bank to cancelled direct debit for mortgage i didn't trust the mortgage company to fo it as our mortgage had continual mistakes by our mortgage company.

Do inform the DVLA. DP didn’t for ages and his many many Dartford Crossing fines racked up as they were going to the old address. Idiot
