Painting a composite door

Our front door is a composite door which had been painted by the previous owners.

I'm not keen on the colour, and it's starting to peel off, but other than that the door is fine - feels secure and I like the glass in the window.

Does anyone have any advice on how to paint the door? I'm going to peel (I've pulled a few bits off where it's loose and it comes off easily, like peeling off PVA glue!

The door underneath is white. The paint chips are green on top and white underneath so I presume it's been under coated first.

So: do I need to undercoat the door? What paint do I need for under coat/ top coat? How do I prep the door?

Thanks!

I’m interested in the response, my composite black door is fine but faded, can it be repainted.

Don't know but I would clean it very, very well, sand very lightly, remove the residue thoroughly and then use an excellent all purpose primer.

The fact it's peeling off so easily should give you a good hint about whether it's likely to last though!

Thanks @Murmurur! We've lived here quite a long time and looked okay until I started to peel it... then couldn't stop Grin

I'll scrape off the paint and give it a good clean and see what I think of the door with it's original colour!

I painted my door with Frenchie alfresco paint in a light grey. They have lovely colours and didn't need to prime..just gave it a good clean. It looks lovely.

I painted my front door with rustoleum universal all surface paint. It's been over a year and hasn't chipped or anything. I got it in homebase, there was a variety of colours.

Forgot to add my door was an already painted composite door. I washed it with sugar soap before painting and lightly buffed over chipped bits where sticking birthday banners etc had pulled the paint. The paint doesn't require a primer

I got this Rustoleum one, Amazon have it also.

I haven't used it yet but the reviews are good.

Paint

It says no prep needed, but I will sugar soap the door and try a small bit first.

We painted ours with French chic paint and it went on well, no peeling and no need to undercoat it first.

Ooh thanks will have a look into both of those... definitely a job for the next few weeks before it gets too cold to leave the door open whilst it dries!

Just to update - painted it last week with Frenchic paint (after finally tracking some down!) and it's gone on very nicely. Had lots of compliments too.
